I must say here, in defense not only of Mac software; but rather in defense of all O/S, I think really the emphasis is placed in the wrong place.

Regardless of the O/S, if the user sits behind a hardware firewall ( and in most cases two hardware firewalls, one being the IP address of the router, the other being the IP address of the modem) and one decent software two way firewall, the place to look is the user, who can often be visiting sketchy sites. AVG has a free site adviser to help. The best offense is a good defense, the user should look to his or her behavior.

I just recently needed a new driver for a Broadcom NIC. I found it only on sites in Russia. But the AVG site adviser gave me the go ahead for the site I used, and everything was fine.

I think sources like Wired need stuff about which to write. While I am admittedly a Microsoft fan-boy, I am an Apple stockholder and I respect the company.
