Apple to introduce a smaller iPod . . .

Postby DJGM » Wed 31 Dec, 2003 2:42 pm

New iPod going for a song

COMPUTER giant Apple is to launch a mini version of its hit iPod music player — for
just UK£65 (about US$110). More than a million of the original pocket jukeboxes
flew off shelves around the world this year. They can hold up to 10,000 tracks,
but cost £250 to £400. Apple (based in California) is expected to unveil
the cheaper version in San Francisco next week.

Apple launches mini iPod

Days after more than a million people paid up to £400 for the most
popular hi-tech toy of Christmas, the iPod, manufacturer Apple
has announced a cut-price mini version.

The iPod, a digital jukebox which can hold up to 10,000 songs,
has been a worldwide hit in the past two months after Apple
produced a version compatible with Windows computers.

But now Apple is set to release a smaller version,
costing £65, which will be able to store 800 songs.

I'm thinking of getting one of the new ones, myself. It should be late spring early summer.

They have been introduced. They are 249 USD and come in five colors: Silver, Gold, and pastel red, blue, and green. Read more at the SF Chronicle.

US$249 ?!?

That is so damn typical of Apple . . . introduce a great new piece of hardware, and then they have
the absolute nerve to charge an overly extortionate price, that's so more than the thing is worth!

You might as well spend an extra US$50, and get a regular iPod with 11GB more capacity on it!

You are paying for the "compact" and the technology, not just the HD size.

At the current US$-UK£ exchange rate, US$249works out at UK£137. When these smaller iPods
eventually reach the UK, perhaps sometime later this year, I would expect they'll cost us Brits
anywhere between UK£150-200 to buy from 3rd party Apple re-sellers, maybe slightly less if
purchased from the UK branch of the Apple Store Online. The UK currently has no actual
retail Apple Store outlets, just authorised re-sellers like Micro Anvika and PC World.

Eitherway, I will not be buying one of these smaller iPods while they're priced at such an
unacceptably high cost. Even if they are "compact" technology, they still cost too much!

This is my only real grievance against Apple. Great technology, but way too expensive!

Read it and weep, DJGM!

To me, the colors look ugly. I was going to get one...had they been 200 USD or less. Bah! I might have just save up for the new 3rd gen iPod...

Well, seems like the new iPod mini is smaller than my tee six ten.

iPod (15GB, 20GB)
h: 10.4cm; w: 6cm; d: 1.6cm; weight: 158g

iPod (40GB)
h: 10.4cm; w: 6cm; d: 1.8cm; weight: 176g

iPod (mini)
h: 9.1cm; w: 5.1cm; d: 1.3cm; weight: 104g

and my tee six ten
h: 10.2cm; w: 4.4cm; d: 1.9cm; weight: 95g

(the winner in each dimension is in bold face)

The original iPod announced in Oct 2001 (released in Nov 2001) was only 5GB with a price tag of USD 399. Capable of storing up to 1,000 songs.

i really don't see any point in buying one of these remember there running computer technology and if they break they will just cost you an arm and a leg to fix.

I'd like to eventually purchase an iPod or Dell DJ, but they are very expensive.

Not exactly true.
It warranty would cover most fixes (excluding consumable parts).

Even a high-end mobile phone might cost you a fortune to fix it.

They're still way too expensive, even with the 10% discount. If it were a 50% discount, then I might be interested . . .

EDIT: I notice that the 10% discount does not apply to the mini iPods . . .

10% off US$299 for a 15GB iPod is a lot better than US$399 for an original 5GB iPod, Nov 2001, but is still not that attractive without iTunes Music Store available to use.
