During WWDC 2009 today, Apple unveiled Mac OS X Snow Leopard, an even more powerful and refined version of the world’s most advanced operating system and the foundation for future Mac innovation. Snow Leopard builds on a decade of OS X innovation and success with hundreds of refinements, new core technologies, out of the box support for Microsoft Exchange and new accessibility features. And the best part of Snow Leopard is that Mac OS X Snow Leopard will ship as an upgrade for current Mac OS X Leopard users in September 2009 for just US$29.

Mac OS X Snow Leopard is a huge refinement of Mac OS X Leopard, making the Mac even faster, more reliable, and easier to use. All key system applications (including Finder, Mail, iCal, iChat and Safari) are now 64-bit so they can take advantage of all the memory in your Mac. Grand Central Dispatch (GCD) is a revolutionary new way for software to take the advantage of multicore processors. OpenCL is a new technology that unleashes the power of graphics processors to accelerate application performance. OpenCL is a C-based open standard, and all major graphic manufacturers are involved in. QuickTime X is built on new core technologies delivering new features and high performance and high quality for users.

Snow Leopard offers a breakthrough new way to enter characters: Simply draw the characters right on the Multi-Touch trackpad in your Mac notebook. Inputing Chinese character on computers can't be any easier for those who are not familiar with any other Chinese typing methods.

Mac OS X version 10.6 Snow Leopard will be available as an upgrade to Mac OS X version 10.5 Leopard in September 2009 for just US$29 for current Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard users. Mac OS X Snow Leopard requires Macintosh computers with Intel processor.

I have very limited experience with Macs, but what experience I do have is positive. I know most Macs have been running on processors made by Intel for a few years now, so I guess it really only a matter of time before they stopped support the older pre-Intel Mac systems (PowerPC?).

Of course, if Microsoft were to do the same with the new Windows 7 system, of which I'm currently the preview release candidate version, by dropping all support for PC hardware older than three years or so, there'd be a major league uproar about it!

Good points.

When the original iMac was first released in 1998, there was an outcry for the omitting of floppy drive.

Well, my PowerBook G4 (12-inch) won't be able to run Snow Leopard. It is still running 10.4 Tiger as a matter of fact.

Is it capable of upgrading to leopard?I thought leopard was supporting G4 Processors.

Yes, but I haven't bothered upgrading it to 10.5 Leopard. The PowerBook G4 is only 1.33GHz and only 1.25 GB RAM, I think it works fine with Tiger.

10.6 looks really good, and I have a feeling I'll be popping down to the Apple Store in Manchester to get myself a copy, to install on my 17" MacBook Pro. I'm using 10.5.6 at the moment, alongside Windows, and it has been a very positive experience. Snow Kitty (my cute nickname for it) looks to expand on this!

Apple are doing well, I can only see them getting better.

It does, but the recommended minimum CPU is 867MHz, anything lower, and it will suffer speed issues, and is not officially supported. That, and the graphics. You need at least 16MB VRAM. I tried using LeopardInstall to install it on my old 400MHz PowerBook Titanium, for a laugh, and it ran like treacle, because the graphics has only 8MB.

I put my PB in the cupboard, and upgraded to a MacBook Pro, to enjoy Leopard with all the bells and whistles, including Quartz. I'm still very new to Macs, but enjoy every minute, and can now run Windows on the same computer!
