application/octet-stream.......... help!!!!!

Postby ianuk74 » Mon 27 Sep, 2004 11:04 am

I am having massive troubles accessing my mail for yahoo. After I click the login button, I get a message in Netscape saying

"The file login is a type of application/octet-stream and Netscape does not know how to handle this file"

It then gives me an option to open with default which does not work. The saving to file does not work either.

This problem has only just recently started, previously everything was OK. I have not made any changes to my operating systems.

Please can anybody help as this is driving me nuts!!!!!

I had to check this first, because I have found that Yahoo seems to have outdone Microsoft in giving problems to users trying to use it. But, I had no problem at all, logging in, and finding that I had no mail. I am assuming that you are using the Yahoo website, and not the mail in the Mail Client.
I don't see any reason why you are asked to do this, other than if you use Ypops, which Yahoo never let me use.

Yes, I'm using the site.

However, to get round the problem I have configured outlook to collect my mail, which it does, but some mail comes through blank even though the sender has written a message.

There must be a way round this surely?

Go to Edit > Preferences > Navigator > Helper Applications.

Do you see an entry for application/octet-stream?

If so, highlight it and REMOVE it.

You were talking about something in one of your messages, not some part of the login process, weren't you? I had read it the other way around and had no clue, but this interpretation makes more sense.

You're not having the "messages sent by Outlook are compatible only with other Microsoft products" problem, are you?

I am, also, confused. Having Outlook configured to get Yahoo mail, if you pay for it, has nothing to go with Netscape.

"The file login is a type of application/octet-stream and Netscape does not know how to handle this file"

The file had no extension? Just login?

I got something similar by renaming a binary file (I used a z ZIP file) so that it had no extension, then tried to open it within Netscape using File > Open File. I tried renaming a PDF file with no extension but Netscape recognized that filetype and used my acrobat reader plugin. Netscape was able to recognize other renamed files that it handles internally (I tried renaming a PNG and TXT file with no extension and Netscape opened those without asking).

I used a zip file renamed "TESTz" (no extension). If I tried to open the same file but named correctly (Test.ZIP) then I got a dialog asking me what to do with the file "Test.ZIP" of type application/x-zip-compressed, and the default application was given, Compressed Folder.

Attempting to open my zip file renamed "TESTz" (no extension) I got: Image

It would help if you added the following information:

The exact contents of the Netscape Opening ____ box, including the location of the file,

AND

the complete URL of the Yahoo mail login page that causes it.

I had the exact same problem and I just cracked it. You have to go to
Edit\Preferences\Advanced\HTTP Networking and select "HTTP 1.0" instead of "HTTP 1.1". I am sure this will help!

Best wishes

Pythia posted the solution on a Netscape UFAQ.org forum thread, which I saw, and copied here... that was the one and only post by Pythia ... a number of users owe a big thanks on that one :)
