This site by Mozilla shows a graphic history of its attempts to trim down how it uses memory. If you mouse over the charts, you will get extra information. It's quite an interesting site. Check it out.

For desktops, memory is cheaper year after year. People are expecting more and more features from both browsers and today's modern interactive websites (Web 2.0). I don't think using a bit more memory should be a concern to Mozilla.

Memory should be a big concern on devices like iPhone or iPad. It is worth pointing out that many open-source extremists do not like Apple, and Mozilla refused to provide an alternative browser for Apple's iPhone and iPad.

You can get 8GB of DDR3 memory here for $39, I imagine the prices are even lower in the US and Canada. Like Antony says, I think memory usage is more important in mobile devices. My Galaxy Nexus has 1GB ram, so you're going to be a lot more concerned with memory use on a device like that.

Firefox is using 560MB ram here, with five windows and around 20 tabs open in total. That's not much at all, though I've seen the memory reach nearly 2GB before when I'm opening dozens of tabs at a time (usually while browsing eBay or Amazon  ). With the prices so low, I have considered upgrading to 24GB ram. Perhaps it's best just to wait and upgrade my CPU and motherboard too, since I'm still on an older X58 board.

As I recall, the white and very rich Antony has, in his $10,000 computer, a whopping 48GB of memory! :P

I see prices as low as $129 for a 16GB (8x 2GB) kit. $387 for 48GB ram. :o
