Athlon vs Mac

Postby Mandrake » Wed 19 Nov, 2003 10:47 pm

Split from Apple's new 20 inch iMac, Admin.

There still shipping machines with only 256mb ram? 256mb ram really is just the bare minimum, they should have included 512mb ram in that machine, it wouldn't have increased the price much.

If I had that kind of money to spend on a machine, I'd get an Athlon 64 (Faster than ANY mac!) :)

What about an Athlon 64 with FreeBSD installed? At least it might look like a Mac.

FreeBSD runs on old Pentium IIs . . . I don't think I'd install it on an Athlon 64 ;-) FreeBSD probably wouldn't be able to take advantage of the 64bit extensions of the Athlon 64 either. The only OS I know capable of that are the new version of Solaris, and a new version of Windows XP - both of which aren't finished yet.

I was in CompUSA last week, when I bought the copy of SuSE Linux Personal 9.0. In addition to SuSE Linux, and what is now the only retail version of Red Hat available, they also carried a retail version of FreeBSD. It was nice to see a new alternative OS being sold at retail.
