Backing up mail in Netscape 7.2

Postby ayoda » Fri 11 Feb, 2005 5:12 am

Hi all -- thanks for all of your past help, especially Alice -- Netscape 7.2 is working well!

My question is about backing up -- what should I designate for back-up files. I see a "Netscape Profiles" folder, isn't that for Netscape 4.xx and 6.x? I've burned my Mozilla folder onto a CD for backup, will that suffice? Please advise, thanks!

Preventive Browser Maintenance contains some of the info that you seek. The primary thing to backup is your profiles directory.

Glad to hear that Netscape 7.2 is working out well.

If by Mozilla you mean your Application Data\Mozilla folder then yes, that will contain all your Netscape 7.2 profile data including the mail, assuming you haven't chosen a different profile or profile data location outside the Application Data\Mozilla folder..
(For example, some people create a second profile in a custom location; other people change the pop mail account's server settings. "Local Directory" field to point to a custom location.)
.....If you've kept the default locations, then backing up the Application Data\Mozilla folder will work fine. Just be sure to back up frequently.

In Windows 2000 & Windows XP the full path to the default folder containing all your Netscape 7.2 profile data would be something like:
C:\Documents and Settings\%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\<profile name>\xxxxxxxx.SLT

I place my backup files on my D:\ drive in a Backups\Mozilla\Profiles folder. The most important files to back up from the profile's xxxxxxx.SLT folder are:
bookmarks.html
prefs.js
abook.mab abook-1.mab etc., which are your address books
(also back up impab.mab impab-1.mab etc, if you have imported any address books)

I don't back up my xxxxxxxx.SLT\MAIL folder contents because I use the option to leave mail on the server (until deleted or moved from the Inbox) in all my mail account's server settings, AND I duplicate my MAIL in Thunderbird.... BUT, if I also wanted to selectively backup the MAIL files, then I would copy the entire xxxxxxxx.SLT\MAIL folder.

You can choose your own backup strategy. The easiest would be to periodically copy the entire ...Application Data\Mozilla folder (which contains all the Profiles"profile name"\xxxxxxxx.SLT folders). I would do that AFTER compacting the mail folders and clearing the CACHE, to save space.

I mentioned something similar in the other thread awhile back:
Alice wrote:After you have your mail account back to normal:

First make sure you have your Windows Folder Options set to VIEW > Show Hidden Files and Folders. Also UNcheck the setting, "Hide Extensions for known filetypes" so that you can see the prefs.JS file extension.

COPY the prefs.js file from the profile's xxxxxxxx.SLT folder to any other location on your hard drive. While you are at it, copy the bookmarks.html and abook.mab files.

Some people prefer to clear the cache and then make a backup copy of the entire ....Mozilla\Profiles\"profilename" folder for each profile. This page will give you more information:

That strategy is also mentioned here (written for Mozilla 1.5 but applies to Netscape 7.1 also):

Easy Way to Locate and Copy/Backup Mail

Postby ynthian » Tue 26 Sep, 2006 5:55 pm

In Netscape Mail 7.2 under "Edit"/Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings", you can find the folder location where your mail is being stored.

I had to backup my mail for my company laptop and apparently the IT Manager likes to hide important folders like mail. Once I knew the location, the folder poped right up, copy, paste, backup style of my choice on the data, and all was good. Now I can just drop the folders back in the same location on my replacement laptop.

I hope this helps for anyone who does not know or never knew the location of the application data for their mail.

8-)
