Being sick is expensive!

Postby Mandrake » Mon 14 Apr, 2008 10:29 pm

I've been off work since I came home sick on Friday night. I finally got into see my Doctor today, and sheesh!

$55 for a ten minute appointment, with a repeat of that next week. Add that nice little figure to nearly $70 worth of medication and I realise why I don't like getting sick!

A hospital emergency room visit on a weekend day, can easily result in a bill to the insurance company of over $1,000 (USD).

Sounds very good. Is that government's or private health insurance?

and the united kingdom, the national health service is free at the point of use, you pay about £6.50 per prescription (box of medication, basically). appointments are free, and you can usually (!) get them the same day.

haven't the united states government been trying to reform the heath system for years, but don't have the balls to do it because it will upset all the private health insurance companies?

In Australia, Government's Medicare provides free visits to to most doctors. However, some doctors may charge a fee upfront and you go to Medicare offices to claim your money back.

That's right. I had to pay up-front, so I spent twenty minutes filling in a ton of paperwork today so I could claim my refund. :)

Many health plans also have a deductible. My plan, for things like blood work, x-rays, etc. had a $200 deductible two years ago, before the insurance would cover everything else. Last year (2007), this deductible went up to $250. This year, it is now at $300. :(

We (USA) really need health care reform in the worst way. The Presidential Candidates all agree, but will whomever is elected do anything about it? It's highly doubtful!

I have HMO health insurance, and my premiums went up $40/month this year. That really hurts when you're on a fixed income. Not only did the premiums go up, but now the co-pay has gone from $10/visit to $25/visit. Ouch! Same with emergency care... Considering we're one of the richest nations in the world, this should be unacceptable!

I had breast cancer just about 2 years ago, I am still getting looked after, I had two breast surgeries and an aspiration, five weeks of radiation treatments, take tamofen, have an oncologist I see every 4 months, the surgeon, every four months and the only thing it costs me is $5.31 for the tamofen pills monthly. Which is 20% of the cost of the pills. I will not know if I am cured for 3 more years..
But I am not worrying about it....
This year I have had many blood tests, no cost.

I have been seeing my doctor since 1994 every 3 months for my blood pressure. No cost.

I was hospitalized for seven months, in 1987, and continued in rehabilitation for another 6 or 7 mos. plus aquafit......I paid for the aquafit. But otherwise all was at no cost.

I see a Chief Neurologist every year at no cost.
I see a Gynecologist every 6 mos. no cost and any other doctor I need to see.

Of course I live in the greatest country in the world, Canada. :)
We have Free Health insurance whether rich or poor.
I also have a Blue Cross Plan which paid my travelling back and forth to the hospital while getting treatment for cancer.
It will cover a Semi Private room. I haven't used it yet....
It is a private insurance I took out, I have at home care also which I have never used, but just in case I do, I keep that insurance.

Lorraine,

No wonder your love your Canada! What excellent health care benefits you have, and I am so glad, since you do have some very serious health problems.

I will hold positive thoughts for your complete cure for the cancer. You are a brave, strong, and intelligent woman, and I congratulate you for your positive thinking, and will to beat the odds.

Warmest regards,
