Bizzar-o problem --> Netscape won't load ebay & other

Postby radman » Tue 02 Mar, 2004 7:48 pm

Help! My Netscape 7.1 will not load ebay.com, webmd.com, and a few others. I have uninstalled/re-installed, and also tried it in Mozilla Firebird, with the same result -- these pages won't load. Most pages work just fine, but these are pages we visit (or would like to visit) fairly often and it's extremely frustrating. I have no problem loading these pages in IE, but prefer Netscape or Mozilla.

My suspicion is that there's a corrupted dll somewhere, and that the uninstall/re-install process doesn't touch it. I have also tried other fixes I've seen suggested, such as creating a new user profile, but none of those helped.

Does anybody have a suggestion? I'm about out of things to try.
TIA.

If you look at previous posts, maybe a week old, at the most, it seems that there has been quite a discussion about problems with ebay.
I could get in ebay, but had no interest to proceed, so it will load the site. I don't know if you have the popup control enabled or nor (Privacy and Security|Popups. Just add ebay.com to allowed sites, and see if works.

Fulvio,

Thanks, that worked, sort of. The pages will now load, but only after an extremely long delay (more than a minute).

Here's a strange twist to the story: if I go to www.thehungersite.com (which is always a good idea), and then go to ebay.com, the page loads immediately. This was true even before I added ebay to the list of allowed pop-up sites. Seems to me there is a clue here to understanding the underlying problem, for someone with better knowledge than I have.

Is your Javascript turned on? Also, I can't reproduce this. I can load Ebay on Firefox 0.8.

Hi Josh,

Yes, Javascript is turned on. I was wondering if there might be something wrong in the prefs.js file, but again this is past the limit of my knowledge.

I too cannot reproduce the problem on my other platforms, all of which run Windows 2000 and Netscape 7.1 or Mozilla 1.6. It is just the one PC, the one I share with my wife, and that of course is the one that is used for ebay.

Thanks,
Radman

This is really bizzarre. I went one step further than usual, clicking on ebay members, mainly to see if there was any Popup, but there was a wealth of information, which I scanned rapidly. e.g: I found out that there is an ebay toolbar, which does not work with the newer Netscape browsers nor Win98.
ebay.com loads very quickly, and completely.
Now, about your question on the pref.js file. If NS7.1's profile was brand new there should be no problem, but, if it was a "pre-owned" profile, i.e. used for previous versions of Netscape6/7, or worse yet a Mozilla, then I would, seriously, create a new profile. I would not even go all the way setting up NS. Just use it as it comes, but with a different profile name.

Problem solved!!

Postby radman » Sun 07 Mar, 2004 5:29 pm

Just wanted to say thanks for the tips, but, in the end, the problem was solved in a way that nobody had suggested. Namely, I updated my version of AdAware to the latest, and ran it; it removed about 40-50 registry keys. After that -- boom! -- the ebay/webmd/etc. problem went away.

So I am back to being happy with Netscape & Mozilla. I hope this strange set of symptoms (the fact that ebay worked after visiting thehungersite was especially weird) and the solution add up to significant information for the experts. If anybody is interested, I can dig through the AdAware quarantine to see what registry keys were removed.

I'm interested. It might also help others with ebay or other site-loading problems.

I was perfectly happy with AdAware until v.6 came out. It removed a number of things, which I was able to restore, but not before screwing up my Eudor, the one with the ads. And, I have not able to use it in that form. Some .ini was messed up with. And, right now I am beta-testing the loose cannon par exellance, i.e. the AOL AntiSpyware, which you guys do not have to deal with. It found some items undetected by AdAware and Spybot S & D, and it went on and deleted the stuff, without asking questions. If you cannot configure a program, you might as well forget about it.
So far, nothing blew up, but I am very displeased. So far Spybot S & D is the most trustworthy.
