Blue Ray vs. HD-DVD

Postby Subir » Fri 15 Oct, 2004 8:50 am

I have been looking around various computer websites and there seems to be a lot of articles & stuff about Blue Ray & HD-DVD. I presume these are the future successors to DVD? Am I right?

I have a few questions...

 How much data can each one hold (in MBs/GBs)? :?:
 Is it true that Sony's future PlayStation 3 will support Blue Ray? :?:
 Is is true that Apple is backing HD-DVD? :?:
 What will Microsoft's xBox2 support? :?:
 Which format will Microsoft itself be backing? :?:
 Which other companies are backing each format? :?:
 When can we expect these formats to reach the public sector? :?:

Hopefully somebody will be able to answer some or all of my questions above.

Thanks in advance.

Well, in that order:
A Blu-Ray DVD-R can hold about 27GB of space.
According to Sony, PS3 will support Blu-Ray
Apple uses a lot of new technologies, so it is likely that they will
There isn't much info on XBOX2 yet, so hold off and see
MS is still clinging to CD burning in Windows XP, so who knows if they'll even take advantage of it?
These products have reached a semi-public sector, they're just not very ubiquitous yet.

When I first heard about it, they were able to compress 16 gigs of space in blue-ray, then my friend told me it was up in the 20 gig area. Now CNN reports that it's up to 50 or so, and it also mentions what it's *capable* of.

Yes, apparently sony is going to put it on the ps3.

There's big hype about the whole shebang ("blue-ray" vs "hd dvd") --

Blu-ray is a kind of laser encoding format. Today's common DVD burners use red-ray lasers, while blu-ray lasers are thinner and therefore can shove much more onto a DVD. Now, the all-important question will be, can these things work in red-ray DVD drives, or will we all have to upgrade?

Lately, there's been even more DVD innovation like time-bombed DVDs and DVDs that fit into fountain drink caps. Soon though, I bet we'll all find out that DVDs will go the way of laserdiscs, and some new all-powerful format will emerge in its place. Hopefully, that will be some time away, as I'd be too cheap to upgrade.
