Bookmarks Folders have been split into 2 sections

Postby chartsmalm » Tue 05 Aug, 2008 6:44 am

Most of my Bookmarks are in Bookmark folders, established for similarity of subject. Just recently the Folders portion was split into 2 sections - not by my intent or known action. Both sections are accurately sorted. So my Bookmarks are now organized in this fashion:

Some of the Folders sorted accurately A-Z
Stand alone Bookmarks sorted accurately A-Z
The remainder of the Folders sorted accurately A-Z

I really don't need to know how they got that way - although it would be good to know, if it is something that I did inadvertently

What I really need to know is how can I get the two Folder sections back to one group?

It may be because I don't bother with sorting alphabetically that I don't see what you see. All my bookmarks are unsorted, going to Bookmarks|Organize bookmarks. I like to keep what I can in the Bookmarks Toolbar. In fact all my bookmarks are accessible that way. And they are placed in what I feel is my order of importance. Since the Personal Toolbar Folder has been replaced by the Bookmarks Toolbar, I dragged and dropped the Personal Toolbar Folder imported from Netscape, in the old days. I, still, place most of new bookmarks in various folders of the PTFolder. I have saved three of the items provided by Firefox. And, with simple abbreviations of the name (in Properties), I can fit every file and folder in the Bookmarks Toolbar. I, usually, do not even go into Organize Bookmarks. But, of course this is the way that I like to keep my bookmarks, and not you.

Your way vs. My way

Postby chartsmalm » Tue 05 Aug, 2008 12:33 pm

What you describe may be fine for you since it is what you have practiced for several generations of Netscape and Firefox.

Well, the same can be said for my way. I started that way years ago - cannot even remember what browser it was. I use it that way maybe 20 to 39 time a day. All of a sudden I get Firefox 3.0.1 and my bookmarks get turned upside down - and unusable to my particular style of use. I really don't appreciate it.

I know that you didn't do it and cannot fix it, but I now have it off of my chest. I will have to search for a way to satisfy my needs. Thank for taking the time to respond

Like you, I'm not sure that I like the changes in Bookmarks that they made in FF 3.

You have: Some folders / Stand alones / Rest of Folders. All are sorted.
1. I'm not clear if you do or do-not want them sorted.
--- If not: Organize Bookmarks > Views > Sort > Unsorted.
2. Are you able to move (drag and drop) the folders in the second section into position to follow the first set - or wherever you want them? I can do this in the sidebar. I haven't worked enough with Organize Bookmarks to understand the interactions / viewing differences between it and the sidebar.

You do know that Bookmarks now are in a database, not in an html file?
Down at the bottom of the sidebar is a section 'Unsorted Bookmarks'; mine is empty, and I don't know if I am supposed to put things there - for later repositioning - or if this is for FF's use. I just ignore it.

I'm still on version 2x so I can't guarantee this will work on 3 but
a few years ago, my name and location columns got somehow juxtaposed
and Fulvio recommended clicking on the little blue square at the end of the
name, location line and then clicking on "restore natural order" which fixed
it right up.

Bookmarks file

Paul, no, I did not know that it is a database file. What is the suffix? They would not be so 'uncool' to use DBF, would they? Where is it typically filed? I can probably fix my problem if it is a classic database file.

Thanks for your input.

"a database", not a .dbf.
See here, section 3.2, filename places.sqlite.
Also do a Search here at the SillyDog forum for posts concerning [ sqlite ]. There have been some significant architectural shifts implemented in FF 3. This is one of them. Recommendation: work within the FF GUIs if possible. (If you are experienced enough to work outside them, then maybe you could join the development group?)

Someone informed me that if the bookmarks are divided into groups with dividers, the various groups will be sorted independently of each other. Maybe that is what is going on?

Yes, that is exactly what is going on. My questions are:
1. How did that division come about? I didn't do it, knowingly
2. How do I merge the two back into one?

Can't you drag and drop one folder into another set of folder? That's what Paul asked earlier.
I did the moving of folders to my satisfaction. I deleted some new ones, and ignored one or two (what I don't see does not bother me. I rarely go into Organize bookmarks).
Actually, my Bookmark toolbar is better than the old Personal Toolbar, because I combined the best features of 2 and 3.

1. I have no idea, except that if it is right after the bookmarks toolbar, Firefox did it.
2. Remove the divider.

SEPARATED BOOKMARKS

Postby junebug » Mon 15 Sep, 2008 9:57 am

Hi guys, I ran across your post yesterday after hours of trying to discover why my bookmarks were separated and wouldn't sort properly. Well this morning I discovered the solution and I decided to join your group so I could share it and save everyone else endless headaches. It is so darn easy, I'm still laughing and shaking my head in disbelief and frustration. Here's what you do.

Go to "Organize Bookmarks". Highlight your "Bookmarks" folder in the left pane. Then in the right pane, scroll down and somewhere you will see a line across the page. Highlight it and hit delete! This is the separator that is keeping the two sections, well, separate.... Then go back to the left pane and sort your "Bookmark" folder. Problem solved! Crazy isn't it?

Unfortunately, you still have to sort each individual folder, but at least the folders themselves are together in the order you wish.

Hope this helps...

I am, perfectly, satisfied to keep my bookmarks unsorted, but I was curious.
In first place, I do not have anything called, just Bookmarks when I select to Organize.
I have All Bookmarks, though, and within it the Personal Toolbar, and the Bookmarks Menu.
The only way to make any selection is to select Views|Sort by various ways.
I selected by name, and then what? Each one has to be sorted separately. If there is a divider, where is it?

Ok, as you said, when you go to Organize, you have the choices of All Bookmarks, Personal Toolbar and Bookmarks. Highlight Bookmarks. Then in the right pane, all of your Bookmark folders and/or files will be listed. Scroll down (in the right pane) and you should see a line that runs across the pane. Click on the line, then hit Delete. Then go back to the left pane and RIGHT-click on Bookmarks this time. A menu will come up and there will be an option to sort by name. Click that and your bookmarks will sort alphabetically. After sorting, any links that are not in a folder will show up at the bottom of the right pane. Sorting this way (in the left pane) will keep Bookmarks sorted even if you close the browser but if you add more files or folders, they will not sort automatically. You have to do it manually each time you add new files/folders. To sort individual Folders in Bookmarks, again, RIGHT click on the name of the folder, and click on sort by name.

Hope that makes it a little clearer.
