Bookmarks in FF

Postby MichaelJRich » Tue 17 Aug, 2010 7:16 pm

Is there a limit as to how many bookmarks are visible when I click the bookmarks icon in FF? I keep bookmarking pages to the Bookmark Menu, but they don't show up. They are in my history though.

Thanks
Mike

They might be out of sight, but you should see them if you go to Bookmarks|Organize Bookmark.
There is another way, also, to preserve sanity, i.e. to place bookmarks in folders, and to make things even easier to find, have these folders on the Bookmarks toolbar. The names can be abbreviated to take as little room as possible.e.g: since I started these bookmarks when I was using Netscape, and Seamonkey and Firefox (and Thunderbird) are the successor, I have a folder called Ntscp. There is a tiny down arrow to place everything in sight. 32 bookmarks are in sight, and eleven more can be brought up after clicking on the down arrow.
And, I have 14 TV bookmarks, etc.

Oh, I've got folders. Do I have folders? Oh yeah, I gots folders up the wazoo!

I think I sometimes can't remember if a page is bookmarked, so I bookmark it again. I noticed this time the Edit Bookmark header was displayed. Maybe FF is telling me in its own sweet way that I'm dumber than a box of rocks? Can it do that to me?????

Is there a setting for increasing the list of Recently Bookmarked? I seem to always have just ten.

Thanks!!!

Mike

I never paid any attention to Recently Bookmarked. What is "recently"? In my case, because I am not doing much bookmarking, I see items more than one year old. If you do a lot of bookmarking, then what is difference between having a page full of Recently Bookmarked, or a long list which needs to be scrolled.
But, it is your privilege to bookmark furiously. As for different settings, may be they are in about:config, but I do not have a ready answer. But, to get a better organization, I did not make a point about folders, but rather about folder in the Bookmarks Toolbar. I have thirteen of them, and most of my bookmarks are there. All I have to do is to figure out which one has what I want, but it is not so hard.

No Not at all, you have no limit to set the bookmarks.
you can save as many as you like.

Please go to Bookmarks/Organize Bookmarks/

here you can view all of your bookmarks made.

I, personally, feel that bookmarks are handy, but if anything is bookmarked, there will be a slowdown of the browser. I can see all bookmarks, by clicking on Bookmarks, and the way they are stored may work against you.
Most Bookmarks are in folders, in the Bookmarks Toolbar, as well as some out of folders. If you look in the Recently Bookmarked, which just below the Bookmarks Toolbar, you will find a maximum of ten. I deleted two of them, of no use, right now, and two not quite as recent appeared. I can do anything which is done in Organize Bookmarks, right from the Bookmarks dropdown, other than creating new folders, I guess.

Paul Thurrott and many others, no longer bother with bookmarking. Here's what he said in his Mailbag: "I apparently mentioned that I don't use web browser bookmarks (or, in IE, "Favorites") on the most recent episode of Windows Weekly. This caused several readers to ask some variant of:

I'd love to liberate myself from bookmarks. What's your secret?

I use a custom home page that has all the links I use on it. Mine happens to be on Office Live Workspace, using a custom domain, but I suppose there are dozens of solutions for that kind of thing."

Interestingly enough, my wife has been doing this for several years with her Yahoo customized page which allows her to bookmark to her heart's content. Then wherever she goes and whatever computer she is on, she can access her favorites by logging into her Yahoo page. I've also done this and it works just beautifully. Unless one has a gazilion bookmarks (fact is... I'd forget what I had), I can see many folks migrating away from storing all their favorite sites in some elaborate bookmarking scheme.

Here' the link to Thurrott's page and to that particular episode along with an update:

Scott N., a reader of Thurrott's page, recommends 43 marks as an alternative to bookmarks in the traditional way. Here's the link:

I find that the easiest way to bookmark is the old way: pull down the bookmark menu and choose "Bookmark this page", pick the folder from the list and do it. I have the bookmark go to the exact place I want it that way. I removed the "Most recent" and the "Most often visited" folders when they first showed up because I saw no need for them.

True.. it certainly is among the easiest solutions. But many people don't want those bars (menu, address) at the top of their screen. They want a task bar only. So that necessitates other creative ways of bookmarking.
