Boot problem

Postby redhotjoe » Tue 25 Jan, 2005 8:36 am

My system will not boot and wonder if anyone can assist. I think I've checked all the obvious stuff but I failed to be able to solve this issue. I have power on, HDD light and sound, fans etc but no graphics display or POST bleeps.
This is a MSI KT7 Turbo 2 MOBO, with a AMD 700MHz chip. I am helping a friend with this unit, which was reliable until we reloaded XP Pro, and SP2. After the SP2 load the problems started, with several no boots and then when it did boot it was restarting of it own accord. I eventually done a system restore to pre SP2 date which loaded correctly but next time I booted it failed and remained at this stage since.

Anyone has any suggestions I'd be very welcome

Well, there are quite a few reasons that this could happen. I'll start with the most obvious I can think of.

Since the problem is related to something you installed, try disconnecting the IDE cable to whatever hard drive you're booting from. You might have a bad drive on your hand, perhaps SP2 wrote something that shorted it out or something?

After that, try unplugging whatever you have hooked into the back of your PC one at a time, with the monitor being the last to go (in which case you'd need to listen for the POST beeps). Once you find out what device it was, there's your problem.

You might also have some faulty internal component like a disk drive, RAM, processor, etc... That's an if-all-else-fails thing.
