Don't forget about the geographic location of New Zealand and Australia. The cost of building/maintaining the optical fibre cables to other countries is very high.

True... Of course getting ADSL here was a big job too. There was so much going on in the lines that we had to get the outdoor and indoor wiring replaced (thanks to a telephone system from the 20s or 30s). Of course, it's a small price to pay if you consider being able to download a full copy of Linux in about an hour.

Mandrake: Glad that you have joined the ranks of the "really" connected as opposed to those who are just "hanging-on." :)

I have Road Runner (RR) cable service now with a DL speed of 3 mbps (megabits per second) and an upload speed of perhaps 344 kbps. The internet connection costs about $45 (USD) per month and my cable television service is also about $45 per month, so my total bill to Time-Warner cable is $90 a month. I had to have, before Road Runner, two dial-up lines so that we did not tie up the phone all evening. There is no other types broadband available in my area.

RR is quite Netscape/Mozilla friendly. I imagine that is because Time Warner also owns AOL who owns Netscape.

Good news for iiNet customers...

From 12th July (2004), iiNet will have free upgrading to all their customers with their popular bliink account.
In short: customers will have 6 to 18 Gigabytes MORE quota for free and without the peak and off-peak time.

Also, according to Australian IT (newspaper), iiNet is to build their own ADSL network, with the potential of providing ADSL at up to 8Mbps by the end of the year.

Managing director Michael Malone said the new DSL infrastructure would enable iiNet to offer its own customers broadband speeds of up to 8Mbps, the maximum theoretical ADSL speed. Emerging ADSL standards would support speeds of up to 24Mbps, he said.

I know, I read the news at iiNet a few days ago. I get 24gb of downloads a month instead of 8GB

I am still on the 16GB plan... wonder if I shall change my ISP. Still I don't download much.

The Bliink 256+ and Bliink 512+ plans now have unlimited downloads too, which is nice.

We have RoadRunner here at work, and so far I haven't seen a download limitation. Of course, that could be because it is a business-class package. I do know for sure that Speakeasy, who I get ADSL service from at home, does not have download limitations.

I will stick wih my dsl lite at 256 k download. I do not see a need to have much of a faster connection.
