Browser Questions for Curiosity Sake

Postby James » Sun 09 Jan, 2011 5:56 pm

1. How many browsers do you currently have on your computer?
2. What is your default browser?
3. Do you change your default browser frequently or infrequently?
4. Why do you keep several browsers on your computer?
5. Is there a downside to having too many browsers on one's computer?
6. Do you have a sense of "brand loyalty" or is your loyalty strictly to yourself? That is to say, if you believe browser X is now better than browser Y, do you change it to become your default in spite of the fact that browser Y has been your default for many months (perhaps even years)?

1. How many browsers do you currently have on your computer?
2

2. What is your default browser?
Firefox

3. Do you change your default browser frequently or infrequently?
infrequently

4. Why do you keep several browsers on your computer?
IE for the sites that don’t write for or accept Firefox

5. Is there a downside to having too many browsers on one's computer?
A browser is a browser and meant to get you out on the internet. Why
would anyone need more than two unless they're a website designer
and want to test their sites on different applications.

6. Do you have a sense of "brand loyalty" or is your loyalty strictly to yourself? That is to say, if you believe browser X is now better than browser Y, do you change it to become your default in spite of the fact that browser Y has been your default for many months (perhaps even years)?
If a browser is faster, more secure and not a CPU hog, then I switch. Otherwise
if I’m accomplishing my tasks and being productive with my current browser, why switch.

Basically, I am a lazy S.O.B. I use the browser which makes my life the simplest. Generally, that is FF.

A few months ago I was unlucky enough to shatter my laptop's screen, so hopefully I can be of some insight now that I'm primarily using lab machines via an old laptop while I'm out.

James wrote:1. How many browsers do you currently have on your computer?

At home on my laptop, I have just two: Firefox and IE8. While out I run Damn Small Linux, which comes preloaded with Dillo and an old version of Firefox. Most commonly I connect to a machine in the CS department's general-purpose labs, which run both SeaMonkey and Firefox. However, I occasionally find myself on CE's workstations as well, on which my choices are Konqueror and Firefox (on Linux) or Firefox, IE8, and impressively, Netscape 7.1 (on Windows). The Windows machines in the other labs typically have just Firefox and IE8 available.

James wrote:2. What is your default browser?

At home, Firefox. While out, SeaMonkey where available, as I like to be able to check my mail as well.

James wrote:3. Do you change your default browser frequently or infrequently?

I've been a Firefox user for years, and at the moment have no plans to change that.

James wrote:4. Why do you keep several browsers on your computer?

I keep IE8 since it's part of Windows, though now that there's a 64-bit Flash Player out for Windows, I haven't had a reason to use it in quite awhile. There's one lab here on campus that goes as far as to have IE8, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari all installed, so I assume it's all to give people their choice of preferred browser. On the CS lab workstations, I can't really give a reason for the side-by-side installations of Firefox and SeaMonkey, as the department solely recommends the use of SeaMonkey and doesn't even advertise that Firefox is on the machines (it's only accessible by running it from the command line).

James wrote:5. Is there a downside to having too many browsers on one's computer?

Bloat and having bookmarks and such get out of sync are two possible reasons I can think of.

James wrote:6. Do you have a sense of "brand loyalty" or is your loyalty strictly to yourself? I used to be a die-hard Netscape fan, going as far as to use Netscape 4 on older machines that could have ran something like Dillo, but I stopped that around the time I made the switch over to Mozilla Suite. Now I'm primarily a Firefox user, but will basically use anything that gets the job done.

James wrote:1. How many browsers do you currently have on your computer?

I currently have three browsers installed on both my desktop and laptop: SeaMonkey, Firefox, and Internet Explorer 8.

James wrote:2. What is your default browser?

SeaMonkey. I've had it set as my default for the five years of it's existence.

James wrote:3. Do you change your default browser frequently or infrequently?

Infrequently. Like I've said above, I've had SeaMonkey set as my default for many years. I don't anticipate a change any time soon.

James wrote:4. Why do you keep several browsers on your computer?

I keep Internet Explorer on my computer because in Windows, there's no way to remove it. I keep SeaMonkey because it is my main and default browser. I keep Firefox installed just for the sake of having it installed (that sounds like a strange reason, but I like keeping it around).

James wrote:5. Is there a downside to having too many browsers on one's computer?

I suppose that if you have too many, there is a higher risk of developing a problem with one of them down the road, but if you know how to properly manage them, I don't see any major problems occurring.

James wrote:6. Do you have a sense of "brand loyalty" or is your loyalty strictly to yourself? Yes. I have followed Gecko development for nearly ten years, and I still find SeaMonkey (which is the continuation of the original Mozilla App Suite) to be the "purist" form of Gecko just because of it's history and longevity.

James wrote:1. How many browsers do you currently have on your computer?

3 on MacBook Pro.
3 on Mac Pro.

James wrote:2. What is your default browser?

Between Safari and Firefox, depends on the websites.
I have different sets of bookmarks, in short: I use certain browser for certain websites.

James wrote:3. Do you change your default browser frequently or infrequently?

Infrequently, but I do change.

James wrote:4. Why do you keep several browsers on your computer?

Some works better on certain sites.
Also different sets of bookmarks.

James wrote:5. Is there a downside to having too many browsers on one's computer?

Not really. Well, three icons on my Dock.

As for browsers, I have less brand loyalty these days. In the past, I did tend to use Netscape.

Firefox 4 Beta

3. Do you change your default browser frequently or infrequently?

Never
4. Why do you keep several browsers on your computer?

Only IE and Firefox.

5. Is there a downside to having too many browsers on one's computer?

No.

The 'loyalty' I have to Firefox is that I've used it for many years. It's like an old glove that fits well. You can try wearing other gloves, but they just don't seem to fit as well.

I just read a feed re:FF 4, RC and final release next month, still 160 hard bugs to get fixed. I am really anxious to get to FF4 and also IE9; but I am not anxious enough to use a beta.

I found it too buggy myself, Richard. As I mentioned earlier, I've not given up on FF but I'll certainly wait for something speedier and a little more lean than version 3.

1. 3 on both.
2. Firefox on both.
3. infrequently
4. I dislike the browsers that came with the operating systems, but I want to have an alternative to the default in case it cannot do something that I need.
5. I imagine too many would take too much space on the hard drive.
6. I go with whatever I like best. No brand loyalty.

James wrote:1. How many browsers do you currently have on your computer?

About a dozen browsers.

James wrote:2. What is your default browser?

Seamonkey

James wrote:3. Do you change your default browser frequently or infrequently?

Infrequently

James wrote:4. Why do you keep several browsers on your computer?

I use different browsers for different purposes. For example my local state agency websites do not work with anything but IE. A while back hotmail would not work with Seamonkey so I used to Firefox for my junk mail account.

Occasionally I like a change from Seamonkey and will use Opera or Chrome.

James wrote:5. Is there a downside to having too many browsers on one's computer?

Yes and No. I am loyal to using Seamonkey. But if it ever comes to the point where it doesn't meet my needs, I will change.

I really liked Netscape 4.61 but hated Netscape 6. When Netscape 6 came out I went back to using Netscape 4.61. And for a while I chose to use Internet Explorer over Netscape 6.

And I really liked the Mozilla Application Suite which for all practical purposes is now Seamonkey.

I've found Firefox 4 to be solid and stable for beta quality software. At first I had tons of crashes, but I narrowed that down to using my old Firefox 3.6 profile. I created a new profile for Firefox 4 and 99% of the crashes suddenly stopped.

After using Netscape, Mozilla, and Seamonkey for years, I am starting to warm up to the idea of using Chromium in some cases. I doubt Chromium will replace Seamonkey as a default browser. But I find myself now using two browsers to surf the net at one time. Seamonkey is my primary browser and Chromium is my secondary browser. Using this method allows me to be logged into two separate accounts at the same time. For example I can be logged into my gmail account for business and personal account at the same time.

Chrome is fast, it's lean, it's customizable... it's really a great browser. I can't imagine going back to SeaMonkey. For me that would be like stepping back ten years. It just has a clunky look to it. Firefox for all the hoopla of late, is slow and plodding compared to Chrome. I find IE 9 RC faster than FF and surely that's not a good thing. While I currently have four browsers installed, I find that most of my browsing is with Chrome and Opera 11.
