Luckily there's a generously wide selection of web browsers available for Mac OS X . . .

SeaMonkey Suite - Community based replacement for the former Mozilla App-Suite.
Mozilla Camino - Mac OS X native browser that uses the Mozilla Gecko engine.
Mozilla Firefox - The most popular browser that isn't Internet Explorer!

OmniWeb - Built upon the Apple WebKit engine used in Safari, but not free.
Opera - Cross platform browser that ought to be more popular than it is.
Shiira - Free browser built upon the Apple WebKit engine used in Safari.
iCab - AFAIK, the only Mac browser that still supports Mac OS 9.x !

FWIW, even though it's officially obsolete now, go here to get Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.2.3 for Mac OS X.
(Microsoft have officially stopped supporting IE for Mac, and no longer offer it for download from Mactopia.)

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

concern about spyware

Postby sbean » Wed 23 Aug, 2006 8:44 pm

thank you so much for the information abundant response! Exactly what I wanted.

I have successfully downloaded a few of them, and will continue. Never heard of most of the browsers.

Question: In my niaviete, is it possible I could download a spyware? if so how do I get diagnosed & doctored?

The Shiira browser for Mac OS X is a project originated in Japan, and the link should take you to
this URL http://hmdt-web.net/shiira/en which is the English language version of the site.

At this moment in time, there is no spyware or malware that affects Mac OS X. The vast majority of spyware,
if not all of it, only affects users of the most widely used operating system, that being Microsoft Windows.

While Mac OS X still only has a fairly low market share, spyware makers aren't bothering with it ... yet.

web tech education

Postby sbean » Thu 24 Aug, 2006 11:16 am

Yes, thank you.
there seems to be such a wealth of information on this site, but I get lost in the conversations because i don't have the basics. I'm asking for some sort of "browsers 101 class" or "best web design software"

I am currently learning HTML and dreamweaver. Our assignment was to find 20 different browsers in which to view our newly created websites. I luckily found sillydog.org and downloaded recommended browsers.

However from searching this site I see there is much I don't know:
Stable vs- unstable browsers.
multitudes of changing browsers.
What are the risks and benefits of different browsers.

Is web design language also changing? Is Perl and Java Script still a sensible next step?
