Calendar not loading at start up

Postby jsjag » Tue 26 Apr, 2005 8:56 am

Why can't I get my calendar to load when MO 1.7.6 starts up. It will do it on my desktop / Win 98 S1 but on my laptop XP SP2 ...nada. I have preferences set to load the calendar at start up but it just won't happen.

Hm......a bit odd. ANy suggestions?

I am not sure what you expect, since I never tried Calendar. Do you want it to open on top of Navigator. My Prefs are from Edit|Prefs|Appearance, check Calendar If you expect that, it does not do the job on my PC, but I would hate it, if it did, but it is available.
and, if I have only Calendar selected, and Navigator unchecked, it loads only Navigator.
I don't know how these things are, but Calendar is part of the program. If you want a Calendar only you get Sunbird, from the Mozilla site.

On my desk top when I click on the Mozill icon, it starts and so does the calendar application. Under preferences/appearance you can mark the option to load several programs at start up. None of the radio bullets will start any other applications at start up.

But, this does not work in your laptop? In my case, and I have a desktop, I can select Calendar or not, and it will not start. It will only when I click on the Calendar icon, or from Windows|Calendar. I have XP with SP1

Correct.
On my laptop calendar does not automatically start when MO starts.

So, we agree on this point. However, see what happens if you have Calendar set to start, or not(it does matter) and make a copy of the shortcut. I renamed mine to 1.7.7 calendar, and right click|Properties and modify the Target path by adding -calendar, with a keyboard space before the -, as well as the Profile switch.
The target path should be like:"C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla\mozilla.exe" -p Moz1.7.5 -calendar -quiet
That allows me to open calendar only with a profile which was originally made for 1.7.5. At this point, I am using NS8 beta, and the Mozilla calendar is open, by-passing the splash screen.
I assume that you want to have Calendar open, but not on top of the browser, so I minimize mine.
After saying that, I must say that I have no idea why you want to open both Calendar and browser, at the same time, but if it can be done automaticatically in Win98, it can't be done in WinXP.
I, personally, like to access Calendar independently of the browser, like I do to mail, for which I use the -mail switch. I just check mail, without opening the browser. You can see why I am very confortable with the Firefox/Thunderbird split, as I am using Mozilla as if it is split. and, now, I have added Calendar aka Sunbird to the mess. I need a lot of shortcuts, but otherwise, everything is cool.

Well I have everything working. what I did was uninstall 1.7.6, reinstall it and then (I know this is against the rules) but installed 1.7.7 overtop of it. I received a message that "previous version installed and will overwrite all third party apps" or something like that. I then reinstalled calendar and now it works. Mail and calendar will both load at startup.

Great, but I still need to know what you mean by loading at startup.
I remember that I had NS4.x set to start Navigator and Mail and News. When I di that I was getting two buttons on the Quick Launch toolbar, and, although Navigator was on top, I could click on the Mail button, and switch mail. when done I had to minimize mail, or else it closed. I did not not see any advantage in doing that, so I left only Navigator checked. I have never seen any such behavior with any post NS4.x suites, including Mozilla. In my case, I see only the home page button, but if I select mail and/or calendar, they will appear on the Quick Launch toolbar, and remain there as long as I have them, at least, minimized.
So, if you have Navigator, Mail and Calendar selected do you see three buttons on the Quick Launch toolbar? That is the only way that they would be open. It would be nice to have mail open, without selecting the icon or window|mail or calendar, but it never happened to me. So... ?
