can't find NETSCAPE.EXE

Postby macx » Sat 02 Nov, 2002 11:30 pm

Hi

Downloaded 7.0, now I can't open files I've downloaded while
using 4.7. Always says "can't find NETSCAPE.EXE"

Have tried uninstalling, dumping all Netscape stuff, and doing clean
download (custom).

Any ideas? Thanks much

Somehow, you must have made or had Netscape.exe your default browser, and you lost your program. Since, netscape.exe is 4.7, that must have been the case. I am not not sure what you mean by files that you downloaded. You must mean install, and the same for for the custom thing.
Also, I do not know what kind of Netscape stuff you dumped. May be you could tell us what you did, more or less step by step.
And, just to avoid confusion, you download something, which you then open, or try to, to install.

Ns.exe

Postby macx » Sun 03 Nov, 2002 12:01 am

I've saved a number of pages from various internet sites while using
4.7. Now I am using 7.0.

My pages I've saved while using 4.7 have the old 4.7 type icon as part
of the file name. When I try to open them, it says it can't find
NETSCAPE.EXE.

From doing some more reading, it seems that must be because I had
deleted all 4.7 stuff - was having some problems with it and wanted a
clean install.

Now that I'm catching on to that, next problem is how do I get
NETSCAPE.EXE back? Do I have to reinstall 4.7, or delete 7.0 first then
reinstall 4.7 then reinstall 7.0 over it?

Or, is there any way to convert those old saves so that 7.0 can open them?

Seems there ought to be an easy way for once! :-)

Thanks!

Netscape.exe is the executable for the NS4.7x browser. The executable for Netscape 7 is Netscp.exe. Any web page that you saved should be "openable" by ANY web browser, including NS4, NS7, and IE.

IF Netscape 4.7 is STILL registered as your DEFAULT browser, then a warning will pop up when you click on those files because dumb windows is still looking for Netscape.exe which was for Netscape 4.7. Perhaps those "icons" that you are mentioning are the icons next to the file names that you see when using Windows Explorer file manager. If there are the icons for NS4 (probable square) than my guess is probably correct. If they are round, for NS7, then I am wrong.

To make Netscape 7 your default browser, open up Netscape 7, go to Edit|Prefences| and click on the + sign to the left of Advanced. Then click on System. I have filled all the boxes in both windows found here except for the boxes listed for JPEG, GIF, BMP and ICO. You may be able to fill fewer boxes to get your system to work right. See the link below for details:

If for some strange reason, you still have problems, you can always re-install Netscape 4.7 since is a completely separate program from NS7. You probably should have just left NS4.7 around as a backup. I have both on all my systems (and also IE).

That requires shift+right-click on Windows 98.

That should work, as long as you make sure "Always use this program to open this type of file" is ticked when you do so.
