Can't install SeaMonkey via the installer

Postby SSS » Mon 05 Mar, 2007 12:14 am

I know I've posted this about an earlier version before, but apparently it got deleted.

When I try to install SM 1.1.1 from the installer, I get this error when it tries to copy files:

Is there any solution to this problem or will I have to use ZIP'd copies of SeaMonkey from now on? :?

Here is a link to same error message at another BBS:

Seamonkey 1.1 install problem

Another forum thread at yet another BBS had no resolution to this problem when it occurred for Thunderbird, but may give you some ideas:

Unable to install version 1.5.0.9.

In any case, a "clean install" where you go to great lengths to delete all evidence of previous installs is always a good place to start.

Perhaps, Ramona can help you out.

I probably can not do much more for you.

SSS,

I'm not sure I can help you, as the OP on the other Forum didn't reply as to whether or not his problem was solved. I did find a bit more on the error, and these were the suggested workarounds:

Several possibilities:

1. The installation file is the "stub" installation, that is a small file that actually downloads mozilla while installing. If so you might not be connected to the Net.
- Download the full installation file again (approximately. 13Mb)

2. Not enough space on your installation drive.
How much free space available?

3. Not enough space on the drive of your temp-dir (typically c:)
Delete everything in your Temp folder on the directory drive: ~\WINDOWS\Temp folder
Empty the recycle bin

4. Some kind of protection or privilige problem try a reboot

5. Some other problem, possibly a Windows problem
---

Before trying any of the above workaround, this is what I would suggest:

Use your Registry Cleaner and delete all Registry Keys associated with Mozilla or SeaMonkey. If you have Firefox or Thunderbird installed, use extreme caution so that you don't delete any Registry Keys associated with either program.

Delete the GRE folder, if you've ever had older versions of Mozilla, or had Netscape installed: C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org\GRE

Delete any Mozilla or Netscape folders (other than Firefox or Thunderbird) in:
C:\Program Files

REBOOT YOUR PC

Read this before trying your install: Before You Install

Now try to install the newly downloaded SeaMonkey file, downloaded from this location:

One other thought; are you disabling your anti-virus program before installing? If not, do that before your clean install...

Ramona, where is 1.1.1 GRE folder. It is not in the same location as 1.0x, i.e. file 1.8.0.10.
There is a Setup GRE folder in the 1.1.x folder

Fulvio,

There is also:

C:\WINDOWS:
- GREUNINSTALL.EXE

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
- greprefs

The all.js file says this:

The prefs in this file are shipped with the GRE and should apply to all
* embedding situations. Application-specific preferences belong somewhere else,
* for example xpfe/bootstrap/browser-prefs.js

There might be other instances, but these were the most obvious. There is no GRE folder per se, for Firefox or Thunderbird. Someone on the MozillaZine Firefox Forum could most likely answer this better than I can...
