Can't Receive Messages with Netscape7.2 EMail

Postby kiteman » Sat 23 Oct, 2010 7:05 pm

My wife still likes her Netscape 7.2 E-Mail, and doesn't want to change. It was working fine up to last night. Then she gets the following message whenever she tries to receive an E-Mail (sending still works fine).

"Unable to write the email to the mailbox. Make sure the file system allows you write privileges, and you have enough disk space to copy the mailbox."

I thought she might have a space problem in her Inbox, so I deleted a large number of messages, but it did not do any good - got the above message. Tried rebooting and temporarily disabling E-Mail checking on my firewall, but I still keep getting the above message.

Can someone help? I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Kiteman

It may have something to do with the settings of the account. Which IP does she use?
Of course, if she has enormous numbers of e-mails in a single folder, it may have to do with the fact, that sooner or later, the program will freak out.

Thanks! I'll look later on today (I'm at work and the account is at home), and let you know.

This problem happened about two years ago, and I tried this forum. There was a troubleshooting document for this published by Ramona. Does it still exist? If it does, could someone point me to it?

Thanks,
kiteman

Not sure of what/how you would be troubleshooting. It appears that you use WinXP, and your mail would be in this location, though, probably hidden, by default:
C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Windows Username>\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.slt\Mail
. The accounts are in the mail folder. For instance my IP is Cox, and the folder would be: pop.east.cox.net. You will be able to see how large are the files (with no .msf extention). Under Tools|Account settings, you would see the account in question. Most important is the "settings" line. For instance, my mail is not authenticated, and I use port 110. If your IP requires authentication, it would use a different port, and if set at 110, you would not receive any mail. Obviously, Outgoing mail is set properly. Incoming and Outgoing mail, usually, match.
Most important, if mail is deleted, the massages will remain in the background, taking a lot of unnecessary space.
If mail is deleted, make sure that the folders are compacted.

Fulvio, thanks very much for responding. I looked at my wife's Incoming port and it was set correctly at 110 (Same as my Outlook Mail account on our ISP).

I solved the problem by moving all her messages from her Server Inbox to her Local Inbox. This did the trick. I don't understand why this worked since there were only about 20 messages in her Server Inbox, and they did not take up much space at all (about 5 Megs).

When I ran into this problem last time (about two years ago), I solved it by removing a folder she had created that was attached to her server Inbox, which had a few messages in it. Again, it took up very little space (a few Megs as I remember)

Maybe one of the messages was corrupted and Netscape couldn't handle it????

I took the path to her mailfile you gave me and was surprised to find folders that had been deleted long ago. I was not sure what to make of that so I just left them.

Thanks,

kiteman

Moving wilol be a temporary fix, but the important thing is to compact folders, either by entering the setting in your option, or manually, like File|Compact. If you don't compact, everything which was removed from sight, remains in the background, and takes up space.
I remember way back when, in the pre-Netscape7 days, a friend told me of a similar problem. He said that he had only four e-mails, none with attachments in the Inbox, but he had well over 100 MB of stuff in the Profile location.
He had never heard of compacting, so he had never done it. I right click on the Inbox folder, and selected to Compact. It took forever, but when done he was down to fewer than 30 Kb, and no more issues.
