Can't save emailed pictures to hard drive

Postby donkim » Sat 09 Apr, 2005 6:04 pm

It started either after MS updates, or the new free AVG virus software was downloaded. I can right click and save images from my browser ok.

OK, first of all, which mail client are you using? I'll assume you're using Thunderbird since you're using Firefox as your browser right now.

First of all, is it just one e-mail that you can't save the images from, or all of them?

Second, when you right-click on the attachment (in the list of attachments) and select Save As, do you get a prompt asking you where to save them? Do you get an error message?

Third, you could always, instead of right-clicking on the attachment names, right-click on the images themselves and select "Save Image As", or whatever it is in Thunderbird. It will have similar context to that.

Any more information would be beneficial, as I can't really tell much from what you've said, besides the fact that it probably wasn't Windows Updates.

And, I doubt that it was the AV, which I have had for years.

I'm using Netscape 7.1 for my email. I want to switch to Thunderbird, but paranoid that I'll lose all my email after reading some of the posts! I can not right click on the image either, it goes through the "motions" like its working normally, I pick my pix file as a destination, but it never saves.

Well, the problem you have is interesting and illusive. You could do one of the following:

1) Upgrade to Thunderbird. As you said, you're worried that you'll lose posts/mail/etc... Trust me, this can't happen, because Thunderbird works from a different profile location than Netscape. All that it will do is read your mail/address book/settings/etc..., nothing will be modified. Therefore, nothing can really happen that'd cause problems, since they do not interact with each other.

2) You might be able to reinstall Netscape 7.1, or better yet, upgrade to Netscape 7.2. But, let's find out if that'd fix it first. Create a new profile in Profile Manager, and temporarily set up your mail account in it, and see if it works that way. If not, you can benefit from reinstalling. If it does, that's a sign of different problems.

For the record, the suggestions on these pages can help with downloading, file saving and e-mail attachment problems in Netscape 7.1:
