Cannot access ftp site from Netscape 7.1 OK with IE

Postby aaronr » Sun 07 Aug, 2005 1:16 pm

Uploading a new site (first time) to the server, and every time I tried to access the ftp site from NN7.1, it just gave me an error, and did not even bring up the login script.
I had to dredge up IE and it did the job, but it's such a cludge.
Why won't NN allow me to sign in on the ftp site?

Netscape 7.x isn't designed for FTP uploading. The only reason IE can do this is due to the components
that make the Windows file browser (explorer.exe) able to access and display the folders and files on
your computer. These components enable IE to become a basic, but fairly useable FTP client.

Eitherway, you'd be better off using a dedicated FTP client to upload files to your website, rather
than relying on internet browsers that aren't primarily designed with that functionality in mind.

Mind you, if you get Firefox, there an extension called FireFTP, that adds a fully fledged FTP
to the browser interface. This enables you to FTP within one tab, while you browse in others.

As well as that, you'd have a browser that's more up to date and secure than Netscape 7.x.

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

I'm not so sure if that's the reason why; I recall that Netscape 4.x was capable of FTP uploading as well.

In fact, once I had the problem sorted out, I uploaded with Deamweaver and everything worked.
In answer to your comment about Firefox, I have 2 computers with it: unfortunately, I cannot get (all) the banks here I use in personal and business dealings to support it. Sigh.

What you could tell these banks about Firefox, is the it uses the same technology as Netscape 7,
but it is more up to date, and more secure, which makes it a far better choice for online banking.

If they all support Netscape, with that explanation, they'll at least look into supporting Firefox.
