My goodness, you better get away from that old version!
There may be several, or at least a couple of reasons, but it boils down to some mail that you do not want. Often, I find that the Delete button is grayed out with such mail. In such cases, I highlight the header, like by single clicking, then right click and select Move to Trash.
I have heard of other cases, but I do not think that it is necessary, and beside I am not sure about it.

If that is caused by Norton AntiVirus, after the detection of virus... you will have to use some special method to delete it.

Antony,

If that is caused by Norton AntiVirus, what special method is that u would use?

Just curious, I'm also using Norton Antivirus.

Removing undeletable email entries caused by NAV

Postby Antony » Sun 24 Nov, 2002 10:08 am

I have a work-around, it solves the undeletable Netscape Mail problems for me.

What happened to me? I received some virus in e-mails, and thanks to Norton AntiVirus (NAV), it caught them while downloading them. HOWEVER, when NAV tried to fix them, they became un-openable, un-deletable and stay in Netscape Mail's folder (Inbox or others).

Problem: Delete them to Trash won't work.

My work-around?
  1. I create a temp sub-folder under Inbox folder, and then I moved all e-mails (except the troublesome one) to that temp sub-folder.
  2. Create a new Netscape profile, exit it. (for copy Indox and Indox.msf file purpose)
  3. Close Netscape 6/7 and use Windows Explorer to go to the Netscape profile folder, then your Mail folder, such as ... (Under Win XP)
    C:\Documents and Settings\ants\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\ants\******.slt\Mail\sillydog.org
(see Netscape 6/7 Profile Locations for more information.)
  4. Delete inbox and inbox.msf files.
  5. Copy the clean inbox and inbox.msf files from the new Netscape profile you created in step 2.
  6. re-launch Netscape 6/7 (Mail) with the old profile, then move the messages (you shifted in step 1) back to the inbox.
Not a very smart method, but this workaround worked for me. It might apply to your case as well.

My Suggestion
When NAV detects any infections in your email, delete it straight away. Don't quarantine them.

I remember the workaround, but I did not remember the need to create another Profile. I think that this problem came up with some very large ads. That's why I use several e-mail accounts, which, rarely, contain more than 20 messages. and, in addition another Inbox, with a different name to which all the stuff I want to save gpes.. It can be a long, painful experience if all your mail is in one Inbox.
Now would it not be possible to move all the mail to the secondary or storage account, leaving the bad one in the original Inbox, which will be treated like you said. And, then Rename the storage Inbox to Inbox? I will have to try this.

Yes, it is possible, and I've done that.
However, I still recommend getting a fresh new Inbox from a new profile.
