Cannot save email to send later in Net 7

Postby trekman » Sat 23 Nov, 2002 6:29 pm

I have had quite a time getting Net 7 working with my address book & email files from 4.7. I had to install 4.7 on my new computer with all my files & them import them to Net 7 as text files. Everything worked fine including saving an unsent message.

Since then I have had other problems with the new computer & have had to restore Windows XP, which wipes out the hard drive.. I have used my email & bookmarks since then so I had to copy the Net 7 format files to my new Net 7 directories instead of importing them. There is no import feature for *.mab files, which is Net 7 address book. Nor is there an import feature for Net 7 mail files.

Now that all the files are copied in the right places & all the paths are set I cannot save a composed email to send later. I get an error message that I must change the settings in Edit\Mail & Newsgroup preferences.
I am pretty familiar with this area from setting up the file paths for my email files. I tried changing the folder for sent mail to local mail & closed Net 7 & reopened, but still it will not save an unsent message. It did work before I copied my email files over to the new profile I created in Net 7.

I have removed Net 7 & then deleted Program\Netscape folder & files. I also deleted all files in documents & settings under Mozilla. Then I reinstalled & after copying my files to my new profile I had the same problem.

I know there has to be another file somewhere that keeps the paths for the email files because the old path was still there under mail & newsgroup settings, when I installed the new copy of Net 7.

Anyone know what the name & location of that file is? Perhaps if I uninstall Net 7 again & delete that file, maybe Net 7 will feel better about the paths.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks

The problem was that I had created a new profile & then deleted the default profile. Netscape seems to very attached to the default. It is better to change the name of the default. Now I can save unsent mail again. :)

Actually, there is an Import utility in Tools of Mail( not Navigator).
There are no Profile file pertaining to NS7 in Program/ Netscape unless you chose to place the files there. So, if you had NS4.7x, you deleted its Profile. Profiles are not removed during the uninstalling, so if there is something screwed up in your Profile, and you copied an entire folder, you can uninstall till doomsday, and it will not help.
The default path for NS7 in WinXP is Documents & Settings/your computer ID/Application Data/Mozilla/Profile .You should see there the name of you profile, after which you open and find a crazy alphanumeric .slt (it is called "salted" by some). I am not sure what you can import from, but if you have your address book in .ldif format, it will do fine.
Your Unsent mail is in the Drafts folder. I am not sure why you have that problem, but can try to delete the drafts.msf file in your mail. If you have saved e-mail files, I would not copy the entire thing, but rather copy just the file with no extention from whatever you saved and paste to the new profile. But, you indicate that you deleted everything, so where did you get your mail, etc.? don't have XP, so I either missed the sequence of events or something else. Anyway, you should have created another Profile, and then gone through all the work.
