Cannot view local files in Netscape Communicator 4.8

Postby Andrew T. » Fri 03 Dec, 2004 5:46 pm

I just realized that I have an odd problem in that I cannot view local HTML files on my hard drive with Netscape Communicator 4.8, running on Windows 95.

When I attempt to open such a file by selecting [tt]File > Open Page > Choose File...[/tt] or by entering a [tt]file:///[/tt]... URL into the location bar, I instead get a dialogue informing me that Communicator needs to spawn an external viewer, and the page then proceeds to load in my default browser, Mozilla Firefox.

In the Navigator > Applications section of Preferences, Communicator is set to handle HTML files by "Netscape (internal)," so I don't really know why this is happening.

This has never happened to me before, and it does not affect my installations of older Netscape versions such as 3.04.

This makes it extraordinarily difficult for me to test to see how local HTML documents render in Communicator.

Are you able to drag an HTML file to Communicator (from Windows Explorer)?

In Preferences | Navigator | Applications
Do you have
[tt]Hypertext Markup Language[/tt] with File type details:
[tt]Extension: HTML HTM SHTML
MIME Type: text/html
Handled By Netscape (internal)[/tt]
UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/125.5.5 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/125.12

No.

Yes.

The interesting thing is, this only occurs when Mozilla Firefox 1.0 is set as my default browser. If I set Mozilla 1.7.3 or Netscape 7.2 as default, I can view local files in Netscape Communicator without problems.

Maybe this odd behavior is actually the fault of Mozilla Firefox.
