"Windows can not find program.exe"
"This program is needed for opening files of type cd audio"

Hi. This is wrong! I put in a cd (any cd) and even after stopping autoplay (auto insert on win 98), the cd appears as an AUDIO cd and worse, shows one file track01.cda. Pretty wild stuff - seeing as this happens with cds loaded with files. This occurs with cds I've created. And with cds created by manufacturers. Happens on win 98 and win xp. Happens where ever I go, apparently. Is there a virus out there that I don't know about?

Chances are you don't have a virus, and that you just have a bad CD drive. I remember a long time ago with my 486 I had a 4x CD drive, after four years of overuse the drive finally went and I had the same problem (only with Win3.1). It would open up in whatever media player I was using at the time and try to play it as an audio CD, only the File Manager wouldn't show a track01.cda.

It would be interesting, maybe, if you were to insert an audio CD and see if it works with the drive's integrated player (if it has one, older ones did). If it doesn't, but you're not ready to give up hope yet, try putting in your Windows CD and seeing if it will boot from it (you might need to tweak your BIOS to get it to do that). If it doesn't, then you definitely have a dead drive. You can get a 56x CD drive at a local computer store for under $40 now if you do find out the drive is dead.

SecureCRT ?

Postby computervirusremoval » Mon 10 Jan, 2005 6:50 pm

I started deleting programs and the first one I thought that was suspicious was (I think - now don't quote me) SecureCRT. Yeah, I know, WRITE DOWN your plan of action - so you can review it - that's what I tell EVERYONE ELSE ! But did I follow my own advice? NO!

Anyhow, I can now read cd's. But here is my next problem. When I try to get into BIOS to change the BOOT ORDER - there is a bloody password! And worse yet, I can't use Dell's default passwords: phoenix, PHOENIX, dell, CMOS or BIOS. (Dell said "the password is based on the serial number that shows on the BIOS boot screen - hello? no such number appears!).

So, now I have to figure out how to reset the bios password without opening the laptop and taking out the battery !

Wish me luck!

Well, if you can read CDs again, why bother reassigning the boot order?
As for BIOS passwords, well, you might be a bit out of luck. You could always try overloading the key buffer by repeatedly pressing the Escape key (over 100 times), although that will take a VERY long time, especially with newer computers.

Do a Google search for the words, "bios password cracker", and you should get over 28,000 hits. I certainly advise you only to try this on your own system.

And the answer is....

1) Reason the boot order needs to be changed:
floppy, cd, hard drive.
Right now, its floppy, hard drive, cd.

2) Bios password "cracker".
Killcmos - store it on a diskette. If you put it on a hard drive, your anti virus software will assume its a password cracker (gee. at least it gets it right - but don't delete it without my permission, eh?)
