While attempting to diagnose an audio problem (was found to be software-related), I removed a CD-ROM drive from one of my desktops and left the CD-RW drive in it. It was simply moved from the middle to the top bay, now using the top connector on the ribbon cable and the jumper moved from SL (slave) to MA (master).

When Windows boots up, the CD-RW drive is still identified as drive E, when it should really be drive D.

Is there a way to change the drive letter? In Windows 9X there was, however I am not able to find the same setting in XP.

You can change it from the Disk Management snap-in for MMC. Go to Start -> Run and type in compmgmt.msc, then look under the Storage drop-down for Disk Management. In here you can right-click on your CD drive's entry and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths", then proceed from there.

two years after this question, I was trying to do the same thing (for a removable drive), but was is tt? I know that there is an Audi tt, and tt is the domain for Trinidad and Tobago, but I get nowhere if I type the letters, or copy your :

compmgmt.msc

. It must stand for something, but I don't know what.
Typing just

compmgmt.msc

, I get Disk Management|Storage|Removable Drive|Media or Libraries. I see the removable drive of interest, but no way to change the letter.
Interestingly, in this message when I bracketed the tt, I got a change in text color, which I lost, when I unbracketed. Compare the two quotes!

Hi Fulvio,

The [ tt ] tag is a formatting tag for monospaced letters that Antony added to the forum, similar to using [ b ] to get bold text. I don't know why it's showing up inline in my old post, because it appears to work fine in this one.

An easier way to do this is to run diskmgmt.msc, then right-click on the drive and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths". A list will pop up that lets you change drive letters associated with that drive.

it confirms what I had said, but it does not give me any drive letter associated with that drive, nor any option to make changes. I did a search and came up with a Windows page which describes such operation, except that I can go only part of the way into it.
The first three steps on the section of :How to change drive letter, go like this:

# Log on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
# Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Performance and Maintenance.
# Click Administrative Tools, double-click Computer Management, and then click Disk Management in the left pane.

, except that after getting to Administrative Tools, there is no Computer Management, nor anything else.
