Charging for Linux?

Postby Ron Williams » Fri 08 Jul, 2005 5:15 pm

I saw this item at the ebay store. Its a version of linux with apps added. I am not sure, but isn't it illegal to charge for linux?

No, it's not illegal to charge any price for a Linux OS. If it was, then companies such as SuSE
(now part of Novell) RedHat, and Mandriva (formerly Mandrakesoft) would be breaking the
law for selling their Linux distributions, as would any other commercial Linux distributor.

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

I'd be curious to know how many they sold.

In fact, ANY flavor of Linux can replace Windows, not just their particular offering...

Edward,
do you also count those "self-made" CDs or DVDs that are priced at around AU$10? (So people do not need to download for a long time if they do not have broadband.)

I believe the actual counting should be the one from the company, with box and printed manual (for some at least).

BTW, OS X is the world's most popular UNIX-based operating system sold. Much more popular than any other UNIX flavours or competitors (e.g. Sun's Solaris)

At the local computer show (when they have them), there is a local Linux user group that gives out free Linux CD's, which are of the group's own build, but is based on Red Hat. Although the software is "free", they do ask for a donation.

Personally, I prefer to purchase the boxed distributions with manual.
