Firefox1.5 will be ok, as soon as they fix the unusually high memory usage. You cannot make a direct comparison with Mozilla1.7.12, as it is based on rv.1.8. Firefox1.0.7 is based on the same gecko rv.1.7.12.
The decision to use a suite like mozilla vs standalones like Firefox+Thunderbird is a matter of preference.
The development of the mozilla suite is over, although it will be maintened if vulnerabilities appear, unlike Netscape, which has hit a brick wall.
And, there is Seamonkey on the horizon, for new developments, and, why now, Donzilla is already here.
