Chrome is clueless, as usual

Postby Fulvio » Wed 14 Dec, 2011 8:20 pm

I will summarize my issues. I had Chrome 15, and it upgraded to v.16. It worked fine, but checking for updates was endless, and I got fed up, and uninstall it after several days of attempted updates. Then, with all the glowing reports about Chrome, I download it again from the website, and installed it. I had saved the profile, and immediately I was told that the profile was created with a more recent version, so it may not work properly.
Aside for the fact that there was no way to know what I was installing, expecting that the Chrome website would know what was current, I checked this installation, and, not too surprisingly, it was v.15. And, it spent the past several days trying to find updates. I uninstalled it, and Secunia told me that I had removed both v.15 and 16.
I, just, downloaded Chrome, again from the website, installed it, and got same message about the profile.
I went, again, to About Google Chrome, and found that I had v.16, and the checking for updates gave me, immediately, the thumb up.
It seems ok now, but it keeps carrying on the same message about the profile. You can see that I am not overjoyed with Chrome's behavior. Is it coming or going?

Why do you check for updates, Fulvio? Chrome provides the updates automatically, freeing you to do the real business of being online. It's really one of the best browsers on the market today.

I check for updates, only, because of the strange behavior exhibited by Chrome, in the past month or so. And, checking is just that. I can't do anything. It may be a great browser, but, every time I open it, it tells me that I can't use my present profile, because it was obtained with a "newer" version. And, that I should specify another profile, or get a newer version. All this is as clear as mud, and as helpful as Microsoft telling me that I cannot install their security updates, because of "a problem" with my system.
I did a Search, and came up with several complaints
By the way, after all this, I can go on, and use the profile. And, I tried the fix given. The path did not exist in WinXP, but I found it, regardless. I deleted the Web Data file, and the warning did not come up.
I discovered another dumb thing in keeping the history index files.

I don't know, Fulvio. For me it just works. I don't know why... but it does. I don't even know what number it's at without checking my user agent string or checking the Help and About Chrome (I mentioned this in the FF thread as well). Really... I LOVE that it auto-updates in the background. Good! I can't be bothered. I'm doing other things and I don't want to be bothered with all this stuff. As long as it works and as long as its up-to-date, I'm happy.
