click! URL in Messenger, open in other (default) browser ?

Postby Ninho » Wed 03 Nov, 2004 1:09 pm

Hi again !

Does anyone know a way to have links which are "clicked" upon in a Messenger window open with the /defaut/ browser(Windows) rather than Navigator ?

Alright I can drag and drop such a link to a Firebird (or even IE) window, but this is not what I'm asking here... open on click...

Ninho,
Your best bet is probably located in this thread. Although that thread is used to link IE with Netscape Messenger, it should also work with whatever browser you have set as the default.
UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.2) Gecko/20040804 Netscape/7.2 (ax)

Handheld: Palm Treo 650 - Intel PXA270 @ 312MHz, 10MB RAM, 32MB flash, 2.7" LCD, Palm OS 5.4

Hi, Dluchini !

Yes and no. I found that thread, and it certainly asks the same question I've been asking. But the answer there is non existent/false... First, it says to add a preference which, as noted in the thread, does not work (I checked).

Then the thread goes on to what IMHO is misunderstanding the problem (it talks of associating mailto: URLs with whatever mailer, but that is not the problem, on the opposite, what's being asked is associate HTTP etc. URLs from within Netscape Messenger with whatever external browser...)

I fell like my question still stands in full :-( May I recall I asked where to find a reference for Netscape 4's "prefs" and other settings ? I sought the site at Netscape dot com, found nothing technically oriented at all either current or old...

TIA

Well, I don't know if you can do that now... Since Netscape 4 was completely integrated with itself, a link clicked in Mail would attempt to open a link in the program. I doubt there's any way you can change that.

I noticed that you're using Firebird, you could always use Thunderbird instead of Netscape 4, since that will call the default browser.

Hi Don ! It's taken a looong time but at last I'm seing your response here, for which thank you !

Well, you may be right; but I noticed that the opera browser e.g. used to come with a built-in solution, viz. a fake "netscape.exe" wich does whatever magic and tricks Messenger into opening links in Opera. I would like the same, except open in Mozilla Firesomething (either specifically, or as the Default browser) ...

I noticed that you're using Firebird, you could always use Thunderbird instead of Netscape 4, since that will call the default browser.

But I like my Messenger 4.x better ! I wouldn't want to touch Thunderbird (nor "upgrade" from Firebird to Fox, btw...) I wish to keep Netscape for news, but of course, not use Communicator for web browsing.

Was Messenger 4.x code made public ? IF so there must exist people with knowledge of the innner nuts & bolts... just guessing...

TY again

I've been hoping to find a "Thunderbirded" Netscape 4 email program. I have an old computer that Thunderbird and Firefox run too slow on. But K-Meleon works fine on it and I'd like to use Netscape 4's email client on it - or a client based on it as Thunderbird is based on Mozilla's email client.

Or an email equivalent of K-Meleon - Windows only but using Gecko.

If anyone knows of anything like this, I'd appreciate hearing about it.
