Hi Janice,

Welcome to SillyDog 701!

The latest version of Netscape Communicator is 4.8. There is no version made specifically for Windows XP.

It's worth noting that Netscape Communicator is an obsolete product now, and is likely to be riddled with
security holes, that'll never be patched. The modern day equivalent of the old Netscape Communicator
internet suite product is SeaMonkey. It's a lot more up to date, and if any security vulnerabilities
are discovered, they're guaranteed to be patched within a reasonable timeframe.

Anyway, go here if you still really want the old Netscape. But you'd be better off with SeaMonkey.

And by the way, there is a more upto date version of Netscape available, called Netscape Browser.
It has a built in AOL IM client, but no e-mail client or webpage editor. And to be blunt, it's crap!

For what it's worth (Nowt!) the newer Netscape is here, so feel free to give that a whirl!
UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.2; en-US; rv:1.8.0.2) Gecko/20060404 SeaMonkey/1.0.1
SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

I had Netscape4.8 in WinXP Home for almost two years, but when the browser part could not handle things, I moved on. But, there may be problems opening links with a Suite like Netscape4.x. I would look at something simple, like the standalone Mozilla Thunderbird, for mail only.
It would allow you to import you NS4.x settings, on installation.

Can't Install Communicator

Postby bluetipex » Sat 12 May, 2007 2:35 pm

I'm trying to switch from Thunderbird back to Outlook, and apparently this can be done via Communicator then Outlook Express then Outlook.

Whenever I try to install Communicator 4.8 I get an error message along the lines of "Can't install 16 bit program". I'm on IE6 and XP.

Reading this site I now discover that Communicator is obsolete, and that something called "Seamonkey" is the new replacement. Will Outlook Express read Seamonkey email files? I don't think so.

What shall I do? Give up?

There's an alternative method you can use that involves a freeware utility (IMAPsize) instead of Netscape Communicator 4. The directions are available on the IMAPsize website.

Problem Solved

Postby bluetipex » Sat 12 May, 2007 8:01 pm

Thanks for your help, but after a little more investigation I have successfully made the transition and have deleted Thunderbird, and am happily using Outlook, with all my emails including attachments transferred!

Thanks again for your suggestion.
