Computer boot problem....

Postby Cannibalshymn » Fri 22 Jan, 2010 10:44 pm

I have a problem with my computer, in that, when I shut it down and turn it back on, it does not boot and the CPU fan spins at ridiculous speeds and sounds like a jet engine! Took a while, but I figured out that if I unplug the Power Supply from the Motherboard and plug it back in, it will boot! Now, this makes me believe that it is a Power Supply issue, but before I go out and get another one, I would like some insight and see if anyone knows of something else it could be! Any help would be appreciated....Thanks!

Air ventilation issue? Check if all the ventilation holes are clogged with dirt/dust. If so, shut down the computer, and use a vacuum and clear those.
If you are able to open your computer, you night want to check if the fan is full of dirt/dust, if so, use a low power setting and vacuum off gently.

Actually, I have checked, and even tried it open! That is why I am thinking Power issues...But I really hate the idea of getting one and it possibly having the same effect!

It might be the motherboard issue instead of the power supply issue you suspected.

Don might have better ideas.

If you have the machine booting now, go grab a copy of HWMonitor (free) and check out the voltages you're getting off the power supply. Bizarre voltages are a good sign of a failing power supply.

While you're at it, check to see if any of your temperatures are going high enough that they might make the machine turn off. Cutoffs are usually over 90C, but things don't really need to get that hot to spell problems.

It'd be best to take a reading while under load, so fire up a game or something.

Actually, something just crossed my mind. It just recently started doing that and it is plugged in to a power strip...Could the power strip possibly have something to do with it? Just throwing ideas. And, it never has a problem when it is on, just when I shut it down and turn it back on, it even restarts properly.

I really doubt it's your power strip at fault, since there's so little that can go wrong with them. If there were a problem on the AC side, it's more likely that the computer's power supply is drawing a larger-than-typical inrush current, and as a result it's not getting a high enough voltage to properly initialize things. Most power strips employ a varistor which will shunt excess current (read: lower voltage) from whatever's plugged in.

If you're suspicious that might be the cause, either plug it into another one, or just straight into the mains, and see if the problem persists.

The motherboard may be at fault. Last year I had a system that refused to power on. When I unplugged the eight pin power connector from the motherboard the system fans would spin up but the system wouldn't boot. Replacing the motherboard fixed those issues and the system functioned correctly.

That is what I was afraid of...Then I guess I must make due and hope this lasts until I can build one to my specifications! Thanks for your help everyone!

OK, so....I turned my computer off last night, and went to bed. I awoke this morning and turned it on...It happened again :x So I tried unplugging it from the motherboard and everything like before, for 10-15min of trying this I gave up, I had to go to work! I came home, turned it on...It just kept on doing it and doing it! THEN! I remembered! Try plugging it directly into the wall...So I did, and because I done so, I am able to type all of this to everyone! Not saying that it is still not an issue, but it is running...Later on will know for sure!
