Yes, you are correct!
There is no difference in size, for me, when I compact the Sent file.
If your sent emails are stored (even temporarily) in the Sent folder, its size should increase. Even if those emails are moved or deleted, the size
should remain at the increased size until the Sent folder is compacted, when it will change to zero or the total size of any email remaining in it, so you
ought to be seeing a change in the size of the Sent folder under those circumstances. That applies to all folders, even Trash!
However, I do create multiple subfolders, if needed. It is so much easier to find mail to/from one individual this way.
That is what I've always done, I never store email in either the Inbox or Sent folders once I have read incoming mail or sent outgoing mail. As you say, it makes locating email to or from a particular person or organisation much easier.
