Just completed installing SeaMonkey. It imported everything from Netscape 7.2 except the messages in my email inbox. Since I have a quite a few, is there a way I can copy my Netscape inbox file to SeaMonkey? If I can do that, can someone give me the paths to both files?

SeaMonkey also does not seem to be able to build my Netscape Sent file message index (it's probably very large). Seems to hang up in the middle of the build process. This does not appear to be a big deal, as I rarely access my Sent file. Can I also copy the Sent file from Netscape to SeaMonkey? Again, if I can do that, can someone give me the paths to both the files?

Solved Inbox problem. Uninstalled SeaMonkey and deleted all it's folders. Then reinstalled. This time Inbox and Sent files were copied successfully from Netscape. Off and running....

Yeah, retro rules!

Actually did it for my wife. She loves Netscape email, (I use something else) but it had gotten pretty flaky. Someone on this forum advised SeaMonkey had the same format as Netscape, so when I had some time yesterday I tried it. First attempt at the install did not go well, but the second time worked. She's now happily using SeaMonkey.

This forum was very helpful in the past furnishing life support to Netscape email when it crashed. One of the few places I could find some help.

Glad that you got things to work, but Retro has some drawbacks. Not sure if you could have gotten Netscape to limp along for a while longer, and it is possible that you could have, with greater effort than getting Seamonkey to go.

As far as I'm concerned, the problem with Retro is really one of security and lack of support.

Retro is a culturally outdated or aged style, trend, mode, or fashion, from the overall postmodern past, that has since that time become functionally or superficially the norm once again. The use of "retro" style iconography and imagery interjected into post-modern art, advertising, mass media, etc. It generally implies a vintage of at least 15 or 20 years.

In the context that "retro" was being used above, to me, it sounded like it was a software program of some kind.

Netscape, would definitely fall into the "retro" category.

People still like Netscape and some continue to use it today for whatever reason, they become attached to it.

When I bought my first PC in 1997, the first thing I did with Internet Explorer (this was on Windows 95), was to download Netscape Communicator, on a 56K dialup modem back then, it took a good hour. I'm very happy that it lives on as SeaMonkey, as I have always preferred to use a suite for everything as opposed to separate programs.

I have an attachment for Netscape as well (for some unknown reason) but I'd argue (not contentiously mind you) that I honestly can't see how a combination of Firefox and Thunderbird is really "separate" programs in the course of how they operate together. I can click on T-bird just as easily as I can click on the mail icon in the task bar of SeaMonkey since my T-bird icon resides in a Dell dock that drops down from the top of my screen. To me, there really isn't anything much different between SM and FF/TB since you can pretty much skin both to look like one another. Now... if you're into using Composer... well... that's different. I've never really understood why folks continue to use suites (i.e. SM and Opera) when separate browsers now exist. And the numbers seem to indicate that the vast majority have moved on to separate programs. However... there are those who dare to be different (i.e. Steve Jobs-types) and I say: more power to them!

In the end, it all comes down to choice.

Those who prefer to use separate programs can install both Firefox and Thunderbird. Those would prefer to use a suite can install SeaMonkey.

2. Do you Compact the mail folders regularly? If not, they (you mentioned a very large Sent file) can become too large for [ NS / SM / TB ] to handle.
If you need to retain the emails, distribute them into multiple (possibly sub-) folders.

Yes, you are correct!

There is no difference in size, for me, when I compact the Sent file.

If your sent emails are stored (even temporarily) in the Sent folder, its size should increase. Even if those emails are moved or deleted, the size should remain at the increased size until the Sent folder is compacted, when it will change to zero or the total size of any email remaining in it, so you ought to be seeing a change in the size of the Sent folder under those circumstances. That applies to all folders, even Trash!

However, I do create multiple subfolders, if needed. It is so much easier to find mail to/from one individual this way.

That is what I've always done, I never store email in either the Inbox or Sent folders once I have read incoming mail or sent outgoing mail. As you say, it makes locating email to or from a particular person or organisation much easier.
