CPU Overclock

Postby redhotjoe » Mon 31 May, 2004 6:04 am

I have recently just fitted a second hand CPU(P2 450MHz 512Kb L2) to my m/board which previously had a Celeron 433 running very sucessfully for many years. It does not seemed to have speeded things up though. I altered the DIP switiching to accomodate the 450Mhz (100Mhz x 4.5)CPU amd moved the jumper of to the 100MHz selection. All runs great but no noticable improvement in speed. I moved the DIP switches up one level to x5 (max allowable) to see if that would speed up things. No improvement though!! Is there something I should be doing in the Bios, as I have searched to no avail. During the first start up screens the CPU reads P2 450MHz MMX etc, when over clocked by x 1 on the DIP switching should this read so on start up??
Any suggestions. The mother board is 1999 Jetway board a J-7BXAN and say "CPU Bus Frequency selectable by BIOS can select 66MHz to 112MHz let user here more choice to get more performance". Any help great full

First of all, by switching from a 433MHz machine to a 450MHz machine, you won't see m a whole lot of a difference. You need at least about 100MHz to see a noticable performance increase unless you are running some 75MHz box. Second of all, you mentioned that you had a 66MHz front side bus in your BIOS. If it says that you can move it to 112, IU would say move it to about 100. You may get some problems with crashes, etc.. in that case, move it to 75MHz. For the most part, your FSB speed is important because that is how the data gets from RAM and your hard drive to the processor. So it's a combination of both the FSB speed, CPU speed, and RAM speed here.
