CUPS printing problem

Postby trevor2005 » Mon 25 Dec, 2006 10:57 am

Hello all and a Merry Christmas.

Got a new desktop A3 colour printer for Christmas – EPSON Stylus PHOTO R1800 but not being able to print through my iProof PowerRIPX software yet–arrrgghhh!

I downloaded the iProof RIP X software from their site for the printer I just got–no problem.

I also installed the EPSON CD software–no problem.

I did print out a page of text and shades but not through the RIP software.

Then I tried to print via my Quark6.5 and it came up with this error: 'CUPS v1.1.15-2 is ready to print.'

Then (maybe stupidly) downloaded the latest CUPS software CUPS-1.2.7.dmg (from www.cups.org/articles.php?L426) and it appears that now I can not re-install my EPSON printer CD or add printers to the list as it says the Administrator password is required and it does not allow me to enter it? Or something like that.

I use an old PowerMacG4 running OS X 10.3.9 with iProof PowerRIPX 7.1 (I think) and use QuarkXPress 6.5. It is only a 400MHz machine (don't worry I am going to buy a new MacPro soon!)

I need to be able to print pretty urgently. Any suggestions?

Cheers

Is EPSON Stylus PHOTO R1800 supported by iProof PowerRIPX?

Try click on somewhere else, then click it back and see if you can get the input box active.

CUPS Prining Problems

Postby trevor2005 » Wed 27 Dec, 2006 7:08 am

Hello and thank you for the message.

I have a utility called 'Printer Setup Repair' which I ran and it did repair a number of permissions errors.

I can now re-install the EPSON Stylus Photo R1800 cd without any authentication problems, except when it comes to the part when I am to add my printer to the Printer Setup Utility it does not let me and comes up with the following message 'sever-error-service-unavailable.' I have tried connecting my printer to the computer via the FireWire and the USB cable, no joy in either.

So not sure how I can add printers to my list now?

CUPS Prining Problems

Postby trevor2005 » Wed 27 Dec, 2006 12:42 pm

Since installing the 1.2.7 CUPS from the CUPS website I have not been able to add a printer.

The first problem was that I could not install the EPSON CD as it kept saying I did not have permission (even though i am an administrator)
Normally it would give me a login screen to allow me to type my password.

Printer Setup Repair utility problems
Using this utility I have fixed the above cd problem by resetting the permissions.

However the second problem is 'server-error-service-unavailable' message when trying to add a new printer. I have visited the CUPS website to fix this and so far no joy.

This included typing codes in the Terminal window.

CUPS tools option
I have also noticed that I cannot start CUPS and it mentions I do not have appropriate permissions I get the following message:
''The cupsd process cannot be started. Please check the file permissions for the cupds process by verifying the /private/etc and /usr/sbin directories in the "File Permission Verification & Repair" section and try again.''

I have reset the permissions and it seems that they get repaired but when running again they need re-repairing. Running the repair option in Printer Setup Repair utility fixes them at the time but them they just need repairing every time.

I have also tried to change current cupsd.conf to ones that are in the cupsd drop-down list such as: backup, old, new and revert.

Printer Setup Repair utility after running the File Permissions option it gives a list of repaired files but also lists a missing file: /System/Library/StartupItems/PrintingServices/PrintingServices
