Customizable menubar

Postby Joji » Wed 05 Mar, 2003 6:48 pm

Hi, All.
I'm not sure if this is an appropriate forum to post this. If I'm in a wrong place, please let me know.

I've been making a XUL application named "Custom menubar".
It's an additional toolbar which contains most of the menubar items.
It should work on Netscape 7.0x, but haven't tested on an English systems.
If you are interested, please have a test it.
For more details, visit here;
http://member.nifty.ne.jp/georgei/mozilla/custom_menubar_en.html

I think it should be tested with skillful people here, before posting to the public forum.
Also, I want to know your opinion about if this is a useful tool or not.
Any comments will be appreciated. TIA.

Hello Joji,

It is cool!
I tested on Netscape 7.0 (Streamline) on Windows XP SP1. Works great, except, what does the Show/Hide | Full screen do under Preference?

Also, I personally would suggest removing "Stop" and "reload", since already available in main toolbar.

Sorry for my poor instruction.
If you uncheck the button, the custom menubar will not be displayed on the Full Screen Mode.
I edited the text of the webpage.

I know it's a kind of overkill, but one of my Japanese testers suggested me to add them, including "Back" and "Foward", so you can navigate with your toolbar hidden. It might be handy on the low resolution display.
I'm planning to change "Reload" button as super reload (shift plus reload; reload skipping cache).
Anyway, you can hide them easily, if you don't need them. :)

Hello Joji,

Nice tool. I installed it on both Netscape 7.01 Jp build 4 and the new 7.02.
I'm wonder whether it is possible to add a button to change the enlarge or the minimize text size back to normal(default)?
:)

I would like to see a customizable toolbar, so the buttons that should be there (Mail. Home, Radio, and My Netscape), can be there. I wouldn't mind having a shorter address window in order to accommodate the additional buttons.

Just my .07 worth (adjusted for inflation).

Hello, Kucing. Thank you for testing.

I guess you are referring the buttons on Modern skin, "-a" and "+a".
Of course, I first tried to retrieve these icons from Composer, but I found that button size is different between Modern and Classic. So if it works on Modern, it doesn't work on Classic, and vice versa.
(If you are interested in this issue, please let me know. I'll explain for more detalis.)
So I had to use theme independent images to work on both of them.

It might be possible to detect the theme which the user is using, and changing icons according to the theme. But it is beyond my skill, at this time. :)

Edward,

Home button is already included, but not a default one. Click the checkmark button, then select Jump, and checkmark "Home".

Adding "Mail" button should not be so difficult.

Shorter address window seems to be a good idea. Alternatively, if you show "Open Web Location" button, you can get an address bar window when clicking it.

About "Radio" and "My Netscape", if it is a popular demand, I'll add them on the next version.

Thank you for your suggestions.

Hello Joji,
I noticed a small issue.
In pop-up window, the custom menubar is still visible. In most cases it would be nice not to have it shown in pop-up window (such as "What's New on Netscape" and other ads).

I took a look at Joji's web page on this, and although I have not downloaded it, I noticed <CSS> and <HTML> buttons in one of the images.

(Cascading Style Sheets, and HyperText Markup Language), but what do those two buttons actually do?

I agree in most cases it would be nice not to have it shown in pop-up window. But it is useful when changing the language where it doesn’t show the correct coding. (which i can't change in popup when using Netscape)

Antony,

How about change the text "Show/Hide | Full screen" to something like "Show in Full screen"?

I started making XUL program as language pack conscious. In other words, I tried to work it both English and Japanese (and other languages), so I made it a rule to use the texts already exists on Navigator or Composer.
But as you pointed out, this approach has a limitation. I'll consider changing.

As for the popup window issue, I'll find if there is a way to prevent it appearing on popup windows. Maybe adding "hide menubar" button is the easiest way. (Some of you might want to see it on popups; when you want to change the language, as Kucing reported, and/or when you want to save the contents on the popup)

<HTML> is the same as View | Page Source.
<CSS> is for the alternative style sheets. Same as View | Use Style.
