Defective Nvidia Mobile GPUs in MacBooks

Postby Mandrake » Fri 10 Oct, 2008 9:56 pm

I only posted this here because I know Antony has a MacBook Pro with one of the effected GPUs.

This problem effects all mobile G84 and G86 (Geforce 8400, 8500 and 8600) GPUs. Under certain conditions the GPU may fail due to a design flaw (basically the GPU die may actually crack as I understand it).

Dell and a bunch of other companies acknowledged the problem and Nvidia took a $200M hit on it's earnings last quarter to set aside money to fix this problem.

Now Apple has announced that MacBook Pros using the Geforce 8600M GT are effected by this issue. The good news is that Apple is offering free repairs to anyone who has a problem with their notebook's GPU.

Obviously this doesn't effect anyone using Intel or Ati graphics in their Mac notebooks.
