Deleting NS 4.07

Postby ipunty » Mon 19 May, 2003 7:54 pm

I have successfully installaed NS 7.02 and am having prollems deleting the old vs 4.07. I get an error msg. from control panel delete that my notepad isn't large enough to hold NS 4.07 to delete it. How can I proceed? I want to free up the space on my HD. BTW, my mail prolllem seems to be a memory now. Thanks again!

If you want to remove the program, you should use the Add/Remove of Control Panel, although at this point it may not be properly removable.
If you remove the program by deleting it should go into the Trash bin. I do not understand where Notepad comes into the picture.
So, please tell us how are you doing this procedure.

Deleting 4.05

Postby ipunty » Tue 20 May, 2003 9:26 am

Thanks for your response, Fulvio,
As I write, I will retry the process and report what occurs:
I went to start, settings, control panel, add/remove programs, and double clicked. The box came up and I highlighted Netscape Communicator 4.5. Then I clicked the add/remove bar. What I get is a brief flurry and then an error msg. that reads, "Instashield self-extracting EXE", "The decompression of %s failed. There may not be enough free disk space available in the TEMP directory." So, there you have it. I look forward to hearing your ideas. Thanks, Bob

I don't get it. May be you delete some part of the program. Make sure that the Windows|Temp is empty, although I have not done anything with whichever Netscape you have, in ages, so its uninstall procedure may be unfamiliar to me. Try to find Netscape in its installation location, i.e. Program Files|Netscape. You may just want to remove Communicator, so, worse come to worse, right click on the Communicator folder, and delete.

Sometimes you can re-install a program (like NS 4.07, in your case), using the same location as before, and then the uninstall problem is fixed. This will not be true, however, if the uninstall is failing due to a lack of space.

Does NS 4.07 still run when you click on it?

You can, as Fulvio points out, simply delete all directories that relate only to Netscape 4.07 (be very careful here). This leaves some files and registry settings behind, but will free up most of the space used by NS 4.07.

deleting 4.07

Postby ipunty » Wed 21 May, 2003 6:25 pm

Hey Gurus!

I can't find the set-up program for 4.07 so installation will be difficult (I think).)

Yes, NS 4.07 runs just fine when I click on it.

Where do I remove the programs? I am a bit hesitant to do this and your cautions reaffirm that!

Other then that, thanks and keep them idears coming!
Regards,
Bob

Here are download sites for Version 4.07:

Netscape Communicator, 4.07 - SillyDog701 Netscape Archive
Netscape Communicator, 4.07, English

When you reinstall 4.07, the uninstall files will be replaced, and it should enable you to have an uneventful uninstall.

Just be certain to first do a Windows "Find" for *.tmp. Delete all temporary files that are found.

You might also take a look at this Netscape Knowledge Base Article which addresses the decompression error to which you refer:
When installing Communicator I get a decompression error and it complains about TEMP space.

Although your problem is with uninstalling, I believe the workaround referenced would be of value.

deleting 4.07

Postby ipunty » Fri 23 May, 2003 12:35 pm

Thanks Ramona,
I am trying to download 4.07. As far as the files go, I went to find and put in *.tmp as you suggested and got back, among other things, a large quantity of "c:windows\internetlogs" like "xdb1344.tmp" etc. Is this what I am to delete? There was other stuff there too that I am not sure of..
Regards,
Bob

Hi Bob,

It's perfectly safe to delete all files that were found with *.tmp "Find".

delete 4.07

You were right Ramona!
First I acquired the new (old) NS as you suggested and held it. Then, I went back and deleted all those .tmp files. Then I read the article and checked the autoexec.bat and sure enough, it was wrong (had windows in the path). I edited it as directed and restarted the computer. Then, before reinstalling the NS over mine, I tried the control panel add/remove and it worked!!!! So, the old was off and I went back to the downloaded new old and simply deleted it.
Thank you so much for your sage advice. BTW, it could be my imagination, but I think the whole puter is running better now.
Happy Holiday Guru/s! Bob
