Dell Adamo laptop

Postby Antony » Tue 17 Mar, 2009 11:30 am

Dell has introduced Adamo laptop, featuring "ultraportable", the item is believed to take on Apple's MacBook Air.

Unlike the MacBook Air, the Adamo sports a full set of ports including Ethernet, DisplayPort, USB and eSATA. In comparison, the MacBook Air includes a single USB port, DisplayPort and an audio port.

The Adamo also includes an Intel ULV 1.2GHz Core 2 Duo processor, a 13.4-inch LED backlit display, a backlit keyboard, 2GB RAM, a 128GB of solid state storage instead of a traditional hard drive, 802.11n wireless networking, Bluetooth, and 1 built-in 1.3 megapixel camera for US$1,999. An external optical drive that supports burning CDs and DVDs is available as part of a bundle that includes a Tumi laptop sleeve.

Apple's MacBook Air features 1.6GHz or 1.86GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 6MB on-chip shared L2 cache, and US$200 cheaper than Dell's.

I think the real killer is having two USB ports, a hybrid USB/eSATA port and ethernet built in. Including only a single USB port on the MacBook Air and omitting ethernet was a rather silly thing to do IMO.

To me the additional ports might well be worth that extra 400MHz of processing power. (The Adamo has 1.2GHz C2D a standard with a 1.4GHz as an optional upgrade.)

Of course, in an ideal world, we'd have a laptop with the processing power of the MacBook Air and the additional expansion ports of the Adamo. :)

Besides Mac vs PC issue, I think the problem lies on how portability you want. How big the screen you need or willing to carry.

I know Don has no problem carrying his laptop all the time, but I found my 15-inch MacBook Pro is not that portable.

My laptop is 15.7 IN and I have no problem carrying it to classes or just around with me for the day.

A few other things I noticed:

Adamo has an SSD as standard. Apple charges $500 USD for an upgrade to an SSD.

Adamo can also take 4GB ram, the MacBook Air can take only 2GB.

Adamo also uses a low voltage Core 2 Duo CPU (explaining the lower clocks) which would lead to a longer battery life.
