dialer set-up assistance

Postby tomm » Thu 25 Nov, 2004 12:59 pm

I have loaded a 16 bit version of navigator 3.04 and a winsock dialer on an old windows 3.1 machine. the modem dials up and attempts to put in my user name.

when I start up the browser should it start the dialer? It does not.

If I open the browswer it is unable to make a socket connetion.

What should be the sequence to dial up and what settings should I have in the browser / dialer? :?

In my experience, I have been able to automate the dialup process on some ISPs but not with others. If all else fails, this always seems to work for me:

In Trumpet Winsock, go to the Dialler menu and select Manual Login. Now type ATDTxxx-xxxx and press Enter. (Replace those x's with the phone number you wish to dial, assuming you're dialing a local number in the U.S.) You should hear it dialing. Wait for a CONNECT message to appear along with connection speed, and immediately hit Escape. (Otherwise you'll see a NO CARRIER if you don't do this.) After a few seconds, you should see your IP address, and you're good to go. Hope this helps.

Tomm,

Trumpet Winsock will not automatically start when you attempt to dial.
If I remember correctly, you can give Winsock a phone number, username, and password in the correct places, and it should do all the dialing/prompting for you. But, that's going back eight years for me (before I upgraded to Windows 95), so I wouldn't remember.

The reason that you get a "no socket" error is because Windows 3.1 has no native TCP/IP support, so not only will it detect no Internet connection, but it will also find no route to a connection.
IIRC, you can't use SLIP to make an Internet connection. That only gives you Unix shell functionality. I could be wrong, and I probably am, but who knows. Chances are you'll have more luck with PPP than with SLIP.
