I'd hate to be somewhat on topic here, but I'm not really sure what this is all about:

The transparent PNGs seem to be occasionally and randomly turning gray.

A button with very little meaning, apparently. I can play back that file fine without QuickTime 7. If it said "QuickTime 7 Recommended", then I wouldn't mind.
QuickTime Player 7 was the first major media player that supports H.264 video codec. I've been using that icon has been used since the availavility of QuickTime 7. That's back to mid 2005.

Yes, you're right here.

.

You're also right here, however, if and when you do install a codec like CoreAVC or FFdshow or x264, it isn't "QuickTime 7 Required" anymore.

Has your screen's colour depth got changed, somehow?

I take that as your way of saying you shouldn't have made such ado about "QuickTime 7" image.

No; I'm using a 32-bit color depth. It isn't happening right now, but it happened randomly a few times yesterday.

Someone obviously doesn't know how to compress JPEG to a suitable file size.

Then would you care to explain how it can be done?
