Difficulties updating Java

Postby Fulvio » Wed 04 Nov, 2009 2:32 pm

I found out a week, or so, ago that there was an Update 16 to Java.
Three times I tried, and three times I failed. Each time the installation went back to square one. It showed Error 25099, i.e "Unzipping Core Files Failed".
According to the Java site, they were investigating the problem.
Today, I found that there was an update 17. Only Update 15 was showing up in my Add/Remove, although I had never uninstalled the previous versions, as I used to (not unreasonable, since there was only one version listed in the Add/Remove. I tried again, and, sure enough I got the same error.
I tried again, and I got a long message telling me that something in use,and I was not allowed to repeat the installation. At this point, I decided to delete all Temp files which I could
in C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Local Settings. Now the installation began. It must have been some Temp file.
But this time, I decided to change the installation folder. Instead of the default Program File/Java/jr6, I selected the same directory, but outside the Program Files. I did not choose the Yahoo Toolbar, as I never use it, and the installation went without an itch.
Now I decided to check my Program File/Java, and I found two folders. One was a1.6_13, and the other expected jr6. Now, I have two jr6 folders, in different locations. And, only Update 17 is listed in my Add/Remove.
I may have missed something in the instructions, but this suggests that I may have to uninstall the older version, because the Java install will not overwrite the folder.
Is anyone understanding this mess?

I don’t know if this will help, but it’s a program I have used for years to both install and remove old Java versions. Do a Google search for: JavaRa.

If I am reading everything correctly, you're saying that you believe in order to install future versions of Java, you must uninstall the previous version because the newer version will not overwrite it?

This does not sound good.
All I can suggest would be to use CCleaner to fix registry issues and see if that helps anything.

I've never uninstalled the older version of Java on any of our computers nor has our company uninstalled older versions. When a new version is presented, we simply download and install it... period. My computers work fine and our company computer works fine.

I used to have no problem with Java. But, it is recommended to remove older versions. The new version includes older applications. Just look at about:plugins.Typically, one version takes 100MB, and before you know it you may have space problems.
As for the JavaRa, I tried to get it, but could not even start the download.
As for cleaning up the Registry, ccleaner is rather inadequate. Using Eusing Registry Cleaner, I come up with 60-90 issues/week, which were not found by ccleaner.

Well... like I've mentioned in an earlier post, Fulvio, I don't bother to uninstall Java (and many other programs) since space is not an issue for me. I realize it is for you and therefore you're going to need to find a fix for your problem. Sorry I couldn't help. As for registry cleaners... I don't believe in them. I think they do far more harm than good and a number of Microsoft MVPs have recommended just leaving the registry alone. Unless a person has enough know-how to go into the registry himself and remove files that are no longer needed, it seems somewhat foolhardy to trust a program to do this. I've always used the programs that come with Windows to do any defragging and any cleaning. Let's just say that we view these things differently. I wish you well.
