DJGM-i.net - Netscape 7.1 Preview Release . . .

Netscape 7.1 DJGM-i Distro
The Preview Release . . . !

With considerably more work than was necessary with previous DJGM-i Distro builds, using the
almostobsolete CCK program made for Netscape 7.0, a fair bit of config file hacking, that may
infringe the EULA of the NS Browser Distribution Program, and some help from SD701, I've
been working on a beta build of what might eventually become a DJGM-i Distro of NS7.1.

The release notes and download link is here. Make sure you read and understand the release
notes before installing this new preview release. Even though it's been built with v1.4 final
of the Mozilla App-Suite, rather than one of the official release builds of Netscape 7.1, this
build is (IMO, at least) of beta quality, so ensure that you install it in a seperate directory
to any existing installations of Netscape 7.x or Mozilla. Also ensure you create a brand
new profile for use with this beta build, or some of the customisations wil not work.

Full details on the webpage linked above . . .

A very good customised NS 7.1. Haven't found any problems. (Except somehow slow under Windows 98 under Virtual PC, well, everything is slow under Virtual PC.)

Okay, testing from Windows NT 4 (SP6) under Virtual PC under Mac OS X 10.2.6.

The DJGM-i NS 7.1 (Preview) crystal clear Netscape throber.
Nice Calendar integration.
Nice pop-up manager.
To sum up, a very good balance of add-ons. Well done DJGM!

Just how do I remove the "home" button? The "home" link is in personal toolbar by default.
And one question, how do I check resource in WinNT?

This NS7.1 (DJGM-i Distro Preview) will be my default browser under WinNT (VirtualPC) untile the final release.

Re: the Home button add-on.

It can't be uninstalled easily, but it can be hidden via the "View" menu.

Go to - View - Show/Hide - Home Button - and remove the checkmark.
The "Home Button" on the Navigation toolbar will now be hidden, until
you decide to reverse the above procedure, and re-enable the button.

Thanks DJGM. I now have wider location bar!
Good splash screen!

One suggestion:
Perhaps you can add "DJGM-i" to MySidebar tag for default profiles.

BTW, with this minimal installation of this Win NT environment, SillyDog701 looks pretty good still.

Getting rid of the Go, Search, and Print buttons from next to the Netscape throbber, and setting the
navigation buttons to display as "icons only", without the Back, Forward, Reload, Stop text beneath
them adds extra width to the location bar. That way, the home button can be put in the place it's
meant to be on all browsers, on the navigation bar, without losing too much width of the location
bar. This setting looks particularly good when the browser is set to the Classic theme.

Thanks.

One thing I'd like to know though . . . when I get around to making the final
build, or (if necessary) another preview release, what should I build it with?

The forthcoming Mozilla 1.4.1, Mozilla 1.5 or the official Netscape 7.1 build?

If I use one of the upcoming Mozilla milestones, should I alter the UA in the
build to reflect the build version of Mozilla used. Perhaps I could even make
a small alteration, to make it an unofficial Netscape 7.1.1 build, in case AOL
don't bother to release an official Netscape 7.1.1 maintenance update.

How the altered UA might look when used on Windows XP . . .

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.4.1) Gecko/2003**** Netscape/7.1.1 (DJGM-i.net)

or

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.5) Gecko/2003**** Netscape/7.1.1 (DJGM-i.net)

What do you think . . . ?

Then how would I go about changing the about: page?

This would need to heavily altered to remove all the references to Netscape.
and perhaps also the references to other companies like Sun Microsystems.

Whereabouts within a Netscape 7.x installation is this page stored, so that it
can be displayed when the user types about: into the browser location bar?

And what exactly would I call the end product? Gregscape? GregZilla?

On an unrelated subject, looks like this is my 1200th post on these forums!

I'd use Moz 1.4.1 (more stable than 1.5), or you could use the 1.4.1 RCs . . .

Somewhere in the lang pack. Can't check it this week. Remind me later.

I am not sure if that is necessary, probably you need to leave the reference to Sun, please Mozilla's about: page. Make sure you add something like "with help from SillyDog701." :-D

See my first answer.

DJGator?
