DJGM pigeon and default and activation

Postby Fulvio » Tue 21 Jan, 2003 10:29 pm

I don't know if this is a non-feature specific to this CCK or a Netscape's, but since happened twice with it, I must rant. I made NS7.x default, although, as most you know, I have four 7.x and 2 Mozillas. My intention was to make 1.2.1 default, but all six of them became default. This is not bad, really, I am totally anti-default but I can tolerate if anything forces its way. So, when Pigeon was, regularly coming up when I selected Moz1.2.1 I went on and selected the correct Profile. But twice, I selected the Moz1.2.1 Profile. That's when the fun started.
The Activation screen came up, and I did not feel like stuffing the ballot ( I have already voted at least eight times for NS6/7.x). So I wanted to cancel. Just try to it. And, up comes this box telling me about the great things which will happen, if I fill the form. I lost track of how many times the infernal thing cycled. It never stopped, until I CAD.
I had not had problems with Sillydog and Compact 7.01, and a Netscape 7.0.
This statement may change, of course. But, now I can see why anybody would resist filling the activation form. The other question goes with the default. Is it not enough to uncheck all the boxes to take a build out of default. Sorry, I did not do my homework, but now I will go uncheck all boxes, except for Moz1.2.1 and see what happens.

I hesitate to advise the "King of Profiles," :) especially since I can not be sure if anything that I have to say will help. I have only two browsers on my system. Netscape 7.01 has 5 profiles, and Mozilla 1.2.1 has one profile. I usually start each one with the command line switches so I do not open the wrong profile.

You may wish to change your registry.dat temporarily back to a normal file instead of Read Only since I suspect registration and, perhaps, default browser status is saved in this file. Once you are all set, then change it back to Read Only in order to prevent uncontrolled growth.

Go to the browser that you wish to be default and go to Edit|Preferences|Advanced|System and check the appropriate boxes to make it the default browser. Do NOT check the box entitled "Alert me if other applications change these settings." I got both browser reminding me when I checked this box only in Netscape. When I examine the System settings in Mozilla, the same boxes as in Netscape are checked, but Netscape remains my default browser, not Mozilla. Once the two browser were behaving, I set registry.dat back to Read Only.

And there are ways to stop registration.

Take this info with lots of water to ensure that it is flushed through your system rapidly. :)

You are a genius! I did not try it but it should work.
As for pigeon, I uncheck everything in Advanced/System, and then I set to let me know if anything is changing the settings. And Moz1.2.1 came up.
But, when I went to SillyDog, it asked me, politely, if I wanted NS7 to be the default browser. I said no, and it proceeded then to open the desired pages. I will let you know what happens.
