DJGM's Windows Server 2003

Postby Josh » Wed 28 May, 2003 10:05 pm

DJGM,

1. How did you get a copy of Windows Server 2003? I thought that was for servers?

2. Is the UI XP like or did MS change it?

3. Do you have a screenshot?

EDIT:
Split from user agant string thread by Admin. Was re DJGM's Windows Server 2003 posts.

I got my copy of Windows Server 2003 as a six month evaulation free from
the Microsoft Technet UK website. It wasn't a download. I had to fill in an
order form, and wait for it to arrive by mail It uses the XP "Classic" theme
as its default UI, although XP themes such as "Luna" can be used. To use
any suitable XP theme, I would need to enable the "Themes" service.
As this is primarily a business OS, this is disabled by default

This screenshot shows the desktop of Windows Server 2003. I have this OS
running on VirtualPC. I've not got nearly enough spare HDD space on either
of my PC's hard drives to actually install this OS on my PC for real. Aside
from that, I wouldn't install it properly on my PC anyway, even if I did
have enough HDD space, with it being only a six month eval copy.

The next thing I'm going to do with this particular version of Windows, is
try and remove Internet Explorer, and then see if it still works without it!

Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

But DJGM, Internet Explorer is a key component of Windows Server 2003! How do you plan on removing the 'component' DJGM?

Well, I just used IERadicator, then rebooted. It hasn't actually removed IE, but effectively disabled it.
The C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\ folder is still there, so too is the IE desktop icon. When I
double clicked the IE desktop icon, I got the dialog prompt asking to make IE the default browser.
I clicked the "No" button, and the dialog prompt disappeared, but IE did not start. I went to
the Internet Explorer program folder, and double clicked the IEXPLORE.EXE application icon,
and IE still did not start. However, the rest of the OS still works just fine, although I'd
imagine that the server functionality of the system is probably no longer available.

Hmmm ok. I suppose IIS won't work, I'm not sure about the rest of the server functions.

I'm going to delete the whole thing soon anyway. I need the HDD space for something else!

Partly due to the legal settlement between Microsoft and AOL meaning the
possible death knell for Netscape, I've just deleted Windows Server 2003
from my PC. The virtual hard drive file "Windows 2003.vhd" is history!

Doing this, has just freed up almost 4 gigabytes of HDD space!

4 GB? Crikey! NT4 takes up 150mb for me, Win2k 1.5 gb.

Greg: What will you use if Netscape dies?

Will Mozilla die too? I was going to buy a new computer, but I don't think I will bother.

Mozilla is open source, it will live on. It cannot be taken away from us all :-)

I can't speak for DJGM, but I think he'll a Gecko based browser.

No! mozilla.org will not die. Other companies like Sun, HP, and IBM could pick up the slack. Mozilla belongs to US. The code belongs to US and is free forever!

Looking at it from a corporate point of view, Sun or Oracle could take on the role Netscape currently plays, as Gecko could be used in Suns webserver technology, and Oracle in Database technology.

It probably wouldn't take a whole lot to buy the rights to Netscape and the web site, from AOL.

If Netscape were to become just a Silicon Valley memory, I'll just continue to use any other
web browser than IE. As Mozilla is an open source software project, development may well
continue if Netscape bites the digital dust, albeit at a much slower pace. Once Netscape is
out of the picture, unless some other big name tech company like Sun Microsystems, HP
or IBM, becomes the main commercial sponsor of the Mozilla Organization, Mozilla could
become just a volunteer driven project that could eventually be left to stagnate.

Aside from the future of the Mozilla project, as I've said before, if Netscape is killed off,
there will no longer be any decent commercial freeware alternative to Internet Explorer.
