Donzilla 0.7, based on Mozilla

Postby Don_HH2K » Fri 13 May, 2005 10:08 pm

Continued from [sdt=7971]My own variation on Netscape 7.2, "Donzilla"[/sdt]

Okay, seeing that Mozilla 1.7.8 patches a few holes, and since the report load has been lightened a bit, I figured I'd do some much-needed updating and release a Windows build for PR2. Unfortunately, my InstallShield X trial ran out shortly after I created this archive, so I can't make a Linux installer. I'll provide a .tar.gz by Monday. As for a Mac build, who knows.

You can download PR2 from this link to the server. The file contains Gaim 1.3 with GTK+ 2.0, and is 26MB in size. Linux builds are on the way.

PR2 fixes a few branding-related bugs:

The default theme has been switched over to Modern in new profiles. Unfortunately, this provides a bit of a problem for existing profile users: if you used Classic, you get Modern, and vice-versa. The names for them are screwed up in the Apply Theme dialog as well, so I suppose you need to select the opposite one to get the desired effect. This annoying bug will be fixed by the release, once I find out where the appropriate RDF file is that I need to edit.

The about: window has undergone some changes. There are now credits to people working on Donzilla here at SD701, people helping outside of SD701, and the extension developers. The spelling errors in about:mozilla have been corrected, but the titlebar still has not been fixed to read the proper quotation yet.

The graphics have been overhauled a bit. The noteworthy part is the addition of more 3-D graphics. For example, compare the splash screens:

Since bitmaps are always the same size for the same resolution (on account of the fact that they're uncompressed), the code footprint for both images are the same size. The same goes for the rest of the 3D-ized graphics. The icon set will come along soon.

My quick report on Donzilla 0.7PR2.
  • Installer - Still the same two install errors; 1911 and 1406.
  • Nice to see modern as default theme; confused about theme switching; I'll leave it on the default to minimize confusion on my part.
  • Questions about WML: What is WML, and why are there now three versions listed in the UA? [tt](WML/1.3; WML/1.2; WML/1.1; WML/1.0)[/tt]

I think I've discovered that the problem with those two errors is because I'm bein stupid and running the install packager with Donzilla open

In the case of the themes, Modern is Classic and Classic is Modern (I know, confusing)

The four WML parts are because I read somewhere that they had to be declared for each version. I'm not sure of the validity of such a claim, as I haven't found that it does/doesn't do any good. I might take it out by the final provided I find enough evidence against (or for that matter neutral to) it.

A small mistake on the donzilla website:

Donzilla Web Site wrote:Donzilla 0.7 Preview Release 2 is also available. PR2 is a testing-only release, and might have bugs and crash a bit. Donzilla 0.7PR1.5's highlights include an inproved installer, updates to Wmlbrowser, a new codebase (Mozilla 1.7.8), and support for Linux (plugins not included on Linux). Mac builds have yet to be created. You can download 0.7PR2 here:

I may be wrong here, but i don't think WMLBrowser is working. I just tried browsing to a wml webpage and no go, donzilla tried to download it.

I've just noticed this as well... I will download the new 0.6.9 package and see if that works; if not, I'll work on getting it working again.

EDIT -- It apparently works again after installing Wmlbrowser 0.6.9. I don't know why that was happening with 0.6.8, thanks for pointing that out. You should be able to fix the problem on your end by downloading the latest version to the browser.

2ND EDIT -- I've also just noticed that upon installing new software, the Classic and Modern themes re-register themselves properly. Maybe this can be some sort of lead to default-izing the Modern theme?

Well, look here! Donzilla is up on Softpedia, and it received a '100% Clean' award! According to Softpedia, there have been 27 downloads that aren't me, so I guess this is Donzilla's real 'first' public venture of any sort.

It seems like Donzilla is making its way around the Web at last. It's been featured here on SillyDog701, and it's been linked to and ranked by Softpedia. Now, I have apparently caused a stir at Spread Firefox, after posting a screenshot with it of 60,000,000 downloads.

With the upcoming and extremely delayed release of 0.7 Final, maybe we will see a cleaned up version of this...

here's an idea: how about if you added XP-Style menus to Donzilla?

Here's a link explaining how to do that: http://studer.tv/newsweblog-detail.page?news.id=35

It mentions only firefox but i tested it on donzilla, it worked fine:

With this chrome.rdf file, the names of modern and classic will be fixed, keeping modern as the default (i.e. this changes the Description of "Classic" to "Modern" and "Modern" to "Classic")

I'd very much like to do something like that, but the only problem I'd run into is that I have not found a global equivelant of the userChrome.css file, so it would somehow either need to be scripted to be appended to userChrome.css, or I'd need to find the global equivelant. I will see if I can find such a pref inside the modern.jar file.

Recently, Pu7o also contacted me about the legality of the name 'Donzilla'. He noted that the name *zilla was copyrighted by the owners of Godzilla, and Mozilla was given a one-tipe exception. Maybe I'll see what the makers of Go!zilla and various mozdev.org projects did to avoid this?

you could use the xp-style userChrome.css on the "default" profile, that way all created profiles would have xp-style menus :)

I'm guessing you mean under (moz install dir)/defaults/profile? It always made me wonder what that was; now that I know, thanks a lot!

I've just noticed in one Chinese site (Hong Kong), someone is recommending DonZilla!
