They do specify Windows 98 or higher, but Andrew T. was able to run them on a 486 with 16MB of RAM and Win95. K-Meleon would probably run even faster seeing that it doesn't use XUL. But, you mentioned that you're using a P2@233Mhz with 64 MB of RAM. I ran Netscape 7.02 with the same processor at the same speed with only 32MB of RAM quite smoothly, believe it or not. Add 128MB of RAM, and it now runs Server 2003, close to XP.

But, getting back to the subject of being able to run it on Win95, it is possible if you apply the Windows Shared Libraries update. I know you can find more info on this in the NS thread, I'm not sure where, but I know that Andrew T. and DJGM have both posted on such an issue and have got the browsers working.

My preference of Netscape (or any non-IE browser for that matter) has nothing to do with CSS or HTML4, or lack thereof. Those are non-issues for me, as I often disable CSS (or even Javascript altogether.) My reasons for not using IE would stray far outside this topic, so I won't bother everyone with the specifics. IE and standards should never be in the same sentence anyway. ;-)

Back on topic, it's good to see that the ISP issue has been resolved.

I hear ya. Sometimes I am forced to use IE 4 at home, because I can't get a page to display that I really need to see. Other than that, my reason for choosing Netscape from the very start, was because it was the best browser and the best mail client. In the past few years, when the major assault against Netscape by Microsoft has been pretty much successful, the Internet is now a total mess, thanks to Microsoft mainly and a bunch of dumbass webmasters who caved into the easy way of doing things without regard to quality standards. I use Netscape, because I don't have to take a bath afterwards. When I use IE, outside of having to reboot to clear out all the garbage and free up resources, I feel dirty and the urge to take a shower. :ns:

Windows 95 is explicitly included in Mozilla's and K-Meleon's system requirements. The only main concern is that you should ensure that you have the Microsoft Libraries Update installed; this is a routine update that you could already have.

The system requirements of Mozilla browsers are subjective. As far as memory is concerned, you will be able to run Mozilla, Firefox, or K-Meleon with 64MB of RAM, although performance will be more sluggish than it would be with 128MB RAM or more.

Although I indeed ran Mozilla and Mozilla Firefox on a 486 (with 8 MB of RAM, not 16), performance on this hardware was way too slow to be usable.

When those instances occur, I can get around that in Netscape Communicator 99% of the time by either toggling Java/Javascript/CSS settings or by going to File - Edit Page to open in Composer. If I am really insistent on opening a page in Communicator, I'll go as far as tampering with the local cache and fix the broken HTML until it works. Otherwise I just open one of my other browsers, like Lynx, Netscape Navigator Gold, OffByOne, Opera, Mozilla, Firefox, etc. etc. I never have to use IE with all these wonderful alternatives available. :-)
