I use Netscape 7.2 for e-mail and Microsoft Works wordprocessor. When I email a word file as an attachment the recipients cannot open it up. I chose it be sent in plain text and HTML. Any suggestions?

Save it and send it as a Word document. I assume many email clients cannot open anything in Works. You have several options in which Word file to save it in so use the option with the 2006 or the one that has a few versions covered.

It depends on the extention of the file, and if the user has a program capable of opening that file. It is not a case of the e-mail clients, but what is on the user's computer.
I can open anything with free OpenOffice

I think most people do NOT use Works but use Office. That is why I suggested he send his files in a Word format.

You may loose some formatting, but another option is to send it as a Rich Text File or .rtf.

I saved the file in word doc but when the email was opened the attachment also opened in gibberish.

.rtf is the most straightforward way. If a .doc file is downloaded, there is no problem, opening it with OpenOffice.
I am not sure what Works can do, although I used it, at one time.
