eMac and Linux

Postby pm149 » Sun 11 Jul, 2004 5:47 am

I have spent a frustrating few days trying to install Linux on my new eMac [1.25 gHz, OS 10.3.4, 512Mb RAM, 80 Gig HD]. I have tried Yellow Dog and Mandrake, the latest downloads. I got further with Yellow Dog, which seemed to install, and yaboot would load, but I soon stalled. It seems that both YDL and Mandrake refuse to recognise either my display, or my graphics card [ATI 9200, as standard with this model]. Mandrake won't even install without giving up. The irony is that I was able to load the PC version of Mandrake onto Virtual PC on the same computer, with no problems re displays! Has any other eMac owner struck this problem? I must admit it has put me off using Linux further.

The PC version of Linux (under Virtual PC) which uses the emulated display card, not the real hardware card. Try choose other video cards.

Thanks for that, Antony - it helps explain the VPC bit. Now, as to the graphics driver bit: I have tried ATI Radeon drivers 9000 and 9500, in the absence of a 9200 driver. No success. YDL itself has tried to use a Generic OF driver, but basically gets in a loop with X server [?] where it test and fails and tries again, and I basically have to crash to get to get out. Which among the 50 or so drivers should I try, remebering that I have to go trhough a full install to try one new driver?
